Are they reaching back?, 2021

The goal for this piece was to showcase the feeling of the unknown in relationships. The uncertainty of the other. What they are thinking? How are they feeling? Is it the same as what I am feeling? Who are you trying to reach for and asking yourself are they reaching back. 

Arms give you no context of who the people are, only the connectedness and association between them by how they are being used. I wanted the relationship or feeling of the relationship to be identified by the way the viewer interacts with the art. Who they see reaching out and if they see someone reaching back. 

This piece was inspired by David Oliveira, Joan Miro, and Alexander Calder's wire line sculptures. Bringing a two dimensional line into three dimensional space using gestural human arm figures. It explores the use of positive and negative space, light and shadows, and the use of motion. Suspending the arms in the air enables movement in the piece and brings the arms to life.
