Given the right tools, support, and meeting each individual where they are equips the student to achieve their goals. I believe that each student needs to be seen as an individual and have goals specifically tailored to who they are in order to reach their optimal potential. I believe that each student has a goal that they want to achieve, but they need someone to believe in them and set those expectations.

Advocating for Students

I believe that the school counselor's role as an advocate for their students is modeled in many different ways. It is being a safe place to hear the needs of the students and voicing that to administration. It is creating goals and plans for each student. They are the one's that make sure that each student has the tools and resources they need in order to be successful. They advocate not only for their academic success, but also for the students' self-care. They help create a safe environment and give support.

The ethical standards help guide the work of school counselors by making sure that they stay aligned within their role and assuring that all decisions are being thoroughly thought through before being made. Having ethical standards gives a checklist of different criteria to think through such as the student's history, development, external factors, etc. (ASCA, 2019). I believe this guides the counselor in making sure their lesson plans and development plans take into account the variety of factors that make the students unique, but that also unites them.

I would like to make the time during study hall more effective. During this required down time, students will have the opportunity to sign up for personal tutoring or working in the classroom with the teacher of their choice. For the students not seeking any additional help, they can use this time to work ahead on any given class. Students seen struggling, but that do not opt for assistance, will be assigned a personal tutor and time with the guidance counselor to discuss their struggles and why they did not wish to receive help.

This article explored each step of the ASCA lesson plans and how it impacted schools and students based on the school counselor's competency and curriculum. It was fascinating to see the ASCA model broken down and the application of each step. It talked about the strengths and weaknesses of the lesson plans created by each counselor and how effective it was for students. Overall, school counselors are very strong in creating plans for elementary based on feelings and emotions, but tend to leave out academics (Lopez & Mason, 2017). I enjoyed how this article did not just point out the flaws, but also gave solutions on how to accommodate where school counselors are falling short. This article was based more so on creating lesson plans, but that impacts how effective counselors are in the school. It was interesting to view this article in a different lens than what it was initially intended for.

Age IAT
I was caught a little off guard with my results on this test. I tend to always gravitate towards older people rather than younger, so the fact that my results said I prefer younger was surprising. I also believe that it is easier or more common to navigate towards your own though. My preference probably comes from my desire of wanting a community of people my own age and also the fact that I love being a leader which you typically are of those younger than you. I respect older people and love to hear what they have to say, so I just need to make sure I keep an accurate depiction of who they are.

Race IAT
My results did not surprise me on this test. I was actually quite happy to see that my preferences haven't changed since last taking this test a few years ago. I want to continue improving my knowledge on race and being intentional on having diversity in my life.
