The bandage pushes the four toes under the sole of the foot. As the days go by, the bandage is tightened and girls would wear very small sized shoes. This foot binding process takes about two years to complete. After that, their shoes are to be removed so they can manicure their feet. It is important for the girl's feet to be properly doneotherwise, their toe nails can cut into their flesh and cause diseases.

In addition, foot binding have caused long term disabilities. This practice was soon recognized to be old fashioned and considered shameful in many parts of China. By the end of the 20th century, foot binding was banned.
