International mindedness means to me an awareness of human diversity. Having an understanding and appreciation of the differences and similarities between us. This mind set allows us to be able to look at issues from multiple perspectives, open and receptive to differences in opinion to build a more peaceful global community.

A global citizen is a creative problem solver that is aware of the impact of the consequences of their actions or inaction on a global scale. Issues such as global warming, health, and poverty need global thinkers who are open to differences of individuals but united by the core human values to create a better world for generations to come.

Schools today prepare students for global citizenship by relating individual, community, nation, and world issues to topics across different subjects and to activities at school.
In biology class, students learnt about uniformity of life through cells, classification and anatomy. They can develop a sense of appreciation of diversity when they look into genetics. Students gradually build an understanding that a healthy biosphere depends on interdependence among populations and interaction between living and nonliving environment.

In my classroom I often use resources from around the world. Clips and podcasts from BBC or TED. The internet and online resources are an exciting way to integrate other learning communities and different perspectives into the classroom opening windows to the world in real time. Microbiology looking at WHO and the global spread of disease was one topic such topic. Skype and teleconferences have been used to conduct discussions with remote Aboriginal communities when studying ecology and the use of fire a management tool by Park rangers. Our new collaboration centre in the library has been set up with spaces for this purpose. Our school has sisters which have visits along with exchange students from many other countries who are studying abroad. By starting simple discussions in the class about the differences in learning experiences has been helpful.

While teaching ecology abiotic / biotic factors the students watched a documentary about ocean currents and plastic pollution. One section had marine biologists from around the world recording and sharing data to put together a global report card on global ocean health. Students had to investigate the issue technologies / strategies from around the globe to combat the problem (looking at a problem from different countries perspectives). Being a global citizen a discussion on plastic pollution - think global act local which stimulated further action of plastic straws being removed from the school canteen.
Live streaming of peregrine falcons around the world in different habitats was another fun one, same species different habitats then we expanded this to people ..... linked to adaptation speciation
