We all decided that we wanted to focus on the history of Manchester by looking at various abandoned buildings in the city. The main focus was to research their past, see what they become now, and what will become of them in the future. Sophie and Gracie would photograph the buildings, and then everyone else would contribute by researching as much as possible for the zine. We thought that a zine would be the best course of action for the project because, it's clear, straight to the point, and we all can add our skills from our courses onto it.

After photographing buildings around Manchester, Gracie suggested that we solely focus on Theatres as it would make our research and imagery more focused. This would allow us much more leg room to research specific theatres that are linked with each other rather than random buildings around the city. Annabel, Alex and Naila are going to research the theatres, whereas Gracie and Sophie would focus more on the creative aspect of the final zine.

This is the official website of the Royal Exchange Theatre. The website demonstrates the process of the building over the years, and what was it originally built for.

I am very happy with how the shoot turned out. I stuck with my original architectural style of zooming close up into the images to show the details of each individual building. The close up images really show each buildings style.

The Royal Exchange theatre Research-

Although the royal exchange theatre is now a prominent entertainment, shopping and leisure zone now its name comes from the Exchange that it once was. In 1729 the original exchange opened and it was known as 'the market place.' The building was then demolished and was relocated to it current position in St Anns square in 1809. It became a hub for wealthy individuals as it was members only access inside as it was a place for people to meet, talk and strike up new business deals. The building was then pulled down again and made even bigger with 120ft glass domes, this new site opened in 1874. By the 1960s the exchange was no longer in as much use as it once was it was then formally shut in 1968 and re opened as a theatre in 1976. I think this part of the history is an essential part of understanding what the building is about and how it came to be today.

For our zine me and Sophie knew we wanted it to be engaging for the viewer with minimal text and lots of images to look at. We decided to use the format of theatre name, location , architect and when it was opened. We felt like these details gave the viewer the necessary knowledge of theatre they were being shown. We then also found out some interesting facts about each theatre and included that as well for further context. Although I enjoyed looking at the archival images we decided not to put them into our zine because we wanted to solely focus on work we had produced.

Artist Inspiration-

I found this website which has some incredible architectural photographers on it! Lots of these photographers focus on the intricate details present in buildings such as Fernando Guerra and Allan Crow. Focusing on the smaller architectural intricacy's has always been an interest in my work as they are things that the general public miss that photographers are drawn to which is why I love this medium. This technique was something that I implemented when taking pictures of all the theatres.

Music + Soundtrack

Elijah contributed with a last minute ideation for the Zine. He created an immersive soundscape which aimed to emulate the atmosphere inside the theatres to further immerse the reader when they were reading the zine. Sadly this was not implemented into the final design.
