what I found moving in the film was the similarities I felt with the narrator. They talked about their family coming from a different world, but their destiny aligned with expressing their artistry through film. My family has no knowledge of film nor creating art, so I feel I was alienated with my creative expression. This opened my eyes because there are other filmmakers like me.

Something I was not really aware about was how poorly depicted Koreans in movies. I did not know that there is a stigma about how Koreans invented the liquor store. One piece of knowledge I gained was the start of black people to make sure they don’t steal items. I was saddened to learn that the start of that was the start of a complicated relationship between the black and Korean community was due to a Korean women who owned a convince store, killed a 15 year old black girl. I was sad to hear that it started to decrease the the number of Korean stores because it was too dangerous to own one in a black community.

Healing

What I found moving in the film was when Danny spoke on how our own healing can come from the healing of our parents. This is especially moving because it seems to connect with generational issues, and how our parents and their parents and so on have some of the same pain and hurt that we experience, specifically in Latin communities similar to the issues that Asian communities have as well.

When Danny connected his pain to his father's and grandfather's, there was tremendous emotional resonance with me. I could feel what he was going through from the placement of the scene in the larger context of the film. I feel it was very close to the emotional core of the story.

One thing I found moving is how when the Director So Yun Um talks to her father and asks her that “if he passed away would he want her to run the business” and he says “no I would want you to sell this place” I found this really impactful because it did provide financial security but it was a time consuming business where he would spend day and night and he would not want to leave that life for her.

Something I found surprising in this film is that there is not much Korean owned convenience stores because of the danger it created with the LA riots in the 90's and how many Korean stores got torched because of that incident with the killing of a 15 year old black girl.
