Fahrenheit 451 is a novel based on Ray Bradbury's prediction of the future, but in a exaggerated way. Books were classified as the source of all discord and unhappiness in this society; therefore, firemen were given the job to burn books. The government put out this idea in order to cultivate it's people to think in the way the government need them to think. People are loosing the ability to think critically and different perspectives. Guy recognized the issue going on in his society. Montag described how he took pleasure in burning, but was then encouraged by a girl he met at a subway station, Clarisse, who questioned him if he was really happy. This is the point when he realize he was not happy, and began discovering the true happiness.

Ray Bradbury’s F451 sends a strong message regarding societal values, namely the media and its lack of substance. People invest an enormous amount of time into viewing mainstream media, which, according to Bradbury, contains 'so much useless information you feel full'. In comparison, books and knowledge are increasingly disregarded and compacted into 'digests' until they lack nothing but the bare minimal facts in order to keep the attention of readers and in order to be politically correct. This lacks opinion, depth and understanding, it evokes no thought but simply tells you what is what.

Although Montag feels that he should be a ‘fireman’ that contributes to his society and fits in with them, in his inner self he realises that what he is doing is wrong. She is so focused and invested on her virtual family that she fails to see the problems around her. She is obvious to the dangers of the war or the fact that she cares more for her ‘family’ than her own husband.

Clarisse on the other hand can be seen as one of the few exceptions to the society, showing a rebellious character. She isn’t dependent on technology but appreciates the nature and wants to acquire knowledge that isn’t taught as a basic requirement in school. Her death shows the fate of people who do not conform to this society. She is killed so she doesn’t spread her ideas making people question themselves like she did with Montag.

- the message of this book is that books (literature) are very important in a society, they shape a person's knowledge and way of thinking.
- the author suggests that our reliance on technology will limit our connection to nature, make us more selfish, ignorant and emotionless, and unaware of surroundings. This is especially expressed through Mildred and her friends, who live in an unreal world with the 'walls' and the 'relatives' but have little idea of what is going on with their real life. When they vote for the president, they judge the candidates on their appearance, and even until the end, when their city is blown up by the atomic bomb, they have little idea that they are involved in a war.

He is jailed several times for doing something that would be quite normal to do today, like driving at 40 miles an hour, and being a pedestrian.

The story was written around the time of the Cold War and the peak of communism so power and control is a major theme. Bradbury may have been inspired to write F451 by the fact that society was rapidly inventing new technology so Bradbury may had foreseen the future of society and the danger that this poses. Television was also very new during this time so this may have fascinated Bradbury.
He may have seen the effects of this technology on people's actions, meaning that families became more disjointed and antisocial when surrounded by technology.

Clarisse, most likely influenced by her family, specifically her uncle, is able to appreciate the beauty she finds in nature and those around her. She is unafraid to stand in the rain or look up at the sky, daydreaming instead of being dependant on technology. It is these traits, the traits that make her unique and different, that ultimately lead her to her death, proving that society is afraid of things/people that are different and do not conform to the ‘social norm’.

The book connects with many as being about government censorship. However, this is not the intended message of the book. There is a control and manipulation of how people feel and act but it is not due to the burning of books, it is due to the constant ‘opiate’ of the screens and technology. People in this society have no deeper knowledge just superficial ‘factoids’ Like in our own society, which Bradbury could foresee, in the novel people place great value on their technology and ‘family’ within their screens. Bradbury explains it as being stuffed with “so much useless information, you feel full.” By seeing what society, social relationships and life is reduced to in the book, Bradbury communicates the importance and true value of knowledge.

A subtle hidden story is in Mildred, Montag’s wife. She embodies all the qualities of Bradbury’s futuristic society, unable to pull herself from her screens long enough to realise how superficial and empty much of her life is. Her society never finds time to learn, reflect or make true connections with others. It is frowned upon to converse with you family so the emotions you usually get from knowledge and relationships you must obtain by ‘instant gratification’ as Beatty calls it, doing things like driving at top speeds for the adrenaline rush. At the beginning of the novel Mildred commits suicide. I think this is due to having an epiphany like Montag’s, but to a much greater extent, realising that all her ‘relationships’ are not bound by emotional bonds but social constructs.

It is clearly shown that Mildred is unhappy with her life because she attempts to commit suicide in the beginning of the novel. She escape from her feelings through the television walls, called her "family", and these family are her only way to feel "happy". She is aware that she is still not truly happy, but instead of choosing to have conversations with her husband, she chooses the walls. When Montag himself also discovers that he is unhappy, he tries to talk to Mildred, but receives a cold reaction from her as if she does not care about Montag's feeling. She is like a person with an empty shell.

STORY: F451 is about a dystopian place where government has almost full control over what the citizens watch, see read etc. The main protagonist is a fireman, Montag, who realises that the key to life isn’t to burn away books and knowledge. He meets people along his journey that change his mind about things, about views etc. He ends up breaking free from the control, and finds a better, more natural environment he can live happily in.

HIDDEN STORY: I think a hidden story in F451 is the story of Clarisse. Clarisse starts out in the story, making an impact on Montag’s life with her love and interest for nature. She is then featured in the novel on various occasions, only to die of a mysterious death. This story really makes the reader think about what really happened to Clarisse, and her unwritten yet underlying story in F451.

MESSAGE: The message through F451 is a warning about our reliance on technology. The dystopian world Montag lives in is riddled of books and therefore knowledge. Bradbury wants to educate us on the importance of education, and knowledge, through showing us what life would be like without it. Nowadays, children are reliant on technology and are missing things in life that the previous generation loved, like bed-time stories, playing outside and even having that creativity that my generation got from reading books, making stories and seeing friends constantly as a kid in person. Reading a hard copy book is now more or less redundant, and seeing people face to face isn’t as easy as a quick facetime or call. I feel like Bradbury has almost predicted what we live in right now, and his book was a warning.

A hidden story within F451 is Mildred and her “contentment” with her life. Montag’s wife Mildred is the social mouthpiece of societies emptiness and how everything is superficial like her parlour “family” and thimble radios. Society were ignorant because they were empty. Montag describes Mildred as “two moonstones looked up at him in the light of his small hand-held fire; two pale moonstones buried in a creek of clear water over which the life of the world ran, not touching them.” When Montag comes home from work one night after meeting Clarisse for the first time he describes walking into his bedroom where Mildred lied as, “it was like coming into the cold marbled room of a mausoleum after the moon had set. Complete darkness, not a hint of the silver world outside, the windows tightly shut, the chamber a tomb-world where no sound from the great city could penetrate. The room was not empty.” This describing how empty life was but then looking beyond the words to know Mildred was conflicted with happiness in the life she was living.
