I think the novel is mostly about detachment. Every main character does the detachment or has experienced it from other characters. I would like to discuss the psychological effects suffering from detachments brings to the people affected. Each character shows that it comes out in different ways but almost none seem to better their situation.

The novel has hovered around the idea of loss that people experience in their lives. Rashid, Washington, and Hanson all lost someone important to them. Rashid and Washington lost their brothers to death, while Mrs.Hanson lost her husband to divorce. Both Rashid and Washington can no longer talk to their brothers and they have to deal with that pain. Hanson can still talk to her ex-husband but she lost that marriage and relationship with him and has to deal with the pain of him moving on.

I want to know how other people deal with the loss of someone they consider important and how it impacts them in their day-to-day life.

I believe the novel is about the way a social society acts upon the people of color and the way they fight their battles and other battles that are not only for them but others as well. An example of this can be seen how Rashid was fighting the grief he had when his brother Kofi died and the way he was able to write his speech in order to speak out about his struggles to the school so that they would hopefully understand. In other words it was about overcoming obstacles that may be in your way but you can still get through them.

The novel is about dismissal and I say this because each character dismisses themselves from painful situations. Even in the factors a race, African Americans are their but they are being dismissed. In the novel the problems always remain, they are just being dismissed because they are scared for the exposure of feelings that goes for the factor of race and the characters personal problems.

I would like to know if it wasn't for Rashid would Ms. Hansen still not agree with Mr. Washington's perspective or is it merely Rashid that influenced her to keep her distance from Mr. Washington.

At its core, the novel focuses on how rejection can either lead to neglecting your own or embracing others. Each character experienced neglect and rejection in some way which led to them interacting with each other differently. They all used these experiences to get through certain barriers that they faced while at Chelsea.

Also, I would like to know/discuss how can we use rejection or any other negative impacts on our lives to better our surroundings rather than only ourselves.

In my opinion I think the novel is essentially about finding one self. As seen throughout the book not many of of the characters seem to be clear on what they want and even if they are doing the right thing. Just like we saw with Mr. Washington it seem though he was trying to figure himself out, he was loosing himself by doing so. For his past was his torment and couldn't seem to face it nor go past it.
Although it does touch base with topics like racism and rejection, identity loss/confusion is something highly present in the choices each character made through out the novel.

I would want to discuss if the way Mr. Washington negates his past (or anyone in general) and so bitterly goes about his present, have a great impact on each event that took place in his life.

A big theme in the novel that I feel reflects what it is about is intersectionality. It digs deep into the categories or race, class, and gender while developing the topics of disadvantage. This leads into another on of the big ideas, rejection. Intersectionality and rejection play hand in hand in the stories of each character. Both themes described the nature of their lives socially and how they deal with each obstacle. Rashid, Mr. Washington, Ms. Hansen, Gerald, Etc.. have all had to deal with these topics but they have made them who they are.

What I want to know is do you agree with Mr. Washington's view on race and achievement? Is there some truth in his opinions on success?

I think the novel is about character development. Throughout the novel we watch the major characters change & grow. We read their experiences & their thoughts. Compared to the beginning of the novel, there have been different types of changes that the characters have gone through. Their way of thinking & values have changed along with their relationships with people. Even small changes have helped them grow in some aspect.

I would like to discuss how everyday events & decisions lead to the development of a person. Rashid Bryson, goes through a very tumultuous time, and is surrounded in an environment which makes him inferior compared to those around him. The only person Rashid could relate to, Mr. Washington, rejects him. Mr. Washington rejects the fact he is a black man just like Rashid. Rashid is learning to embrace himself while Mr. Washington continues to fall down a path of self-sabotage. I would like to know if Mr. Washington will end up changing or continue acting the way he is.

They all appear to be intertwined, and whatever happens in the life of one of them, will affect the other sooner or later, no matter how big or small that impact might be. It discusses the battle people of color face and how different people tend to have negative or positive views on them depending on their personal experiences and upbringings.

Something I would like to know if Mr. Washington would change anything he has done in his past, or if he is content with what he has done. = J.R.

At its core, I believe that The Fall of Rome is about persistence whether it be the wrong kind or the good kind of persistence. Rashid kept on persisting to be better for himself and he was persistent in wanting more kids like him at the Chelsea school while Washington kept on persisting that the traditions of the school be upheld and was reluctant to help Rashid through his time at Chelsea because of the twisted philosophies that make him believe that Rashid didn't need help. Hansen was persistent in helping Rashid get through his troubles because of her fear of losing another student. She was also persistent in trying to change the way Washington saw Rashid.

I would like to discuss why Rome and those writers were so important to Washington.

The novel the Fall of Rome may be a journey of self-discovery through rejection, loss, and reformation in some way. Each character has faced rejection and/or forsaken from people they entrusted themselves to. Loss of such people or of specific relationships gives each character a background story explaining why they behave the way they do towards others. Reformation is allowing themselves to "heal" those wounds (negatively or positively) after realizing how that behavior has impacted their surroundings—both parties they like and dislike.

Readers have not only witnessed Ms. Hansen and Mr. Washington's budding romance, but their opposing values as well. We felt a grasp of what heartbreak felt like through Rashid, Mr. Washington, and Ms. Hansen's lives. We saw Rashid at his most vulnerable moments, including his break down to Gerald about his brothers death. We saw what it was like for Rashid to be rejected by his parents, and Mr. Washington to reject his own brother. I would like to know whether readers think Rashid's parents would have acted the same way to Kofi if Rashid was the one to pass away instead.

Rashid wanted to hold in his emotions but the only way he could stop feeling bad for himself was to express himself. Ms. Hansen is a huge character because of the emotional impact she has on the other main characters. Causing them to change the way they act or open up about many difficulties.

Rashid expecting his brother to come home and had took a tole on him. He starts to open up about it even if it hurts him. I think once the hurt is gone, the characters will begin to open up and live a little bit more and not hold back.

The novels situates around toxic masculinity. Mr.washington and rashid are both similar when it comes to not expressing their feelings but because of there is a mediocre on how men should be in the society especially showing their emotional side to women. They alseo seem to suffer after rejection and instead of breaking the cycle, it just keeps going and having a withdrawal effect on everyone they are surrounded by. for instance, Mr.washington mom was rejected by her husband and so she extended it to her son and Jerome picked that bad influence and spread it to rashid in the sense of not knowing him and rejecting him for who he is disregarding the fact that he was the same race as him. i would like to know how it would turn out if Jerome wasn't raised in a toxic environment and the feeling that no one else around you can succeed because of the stereotype being taught.
