This article basically tries to inform people about the devastating effects that climate change will have on the United States in the next decades. In the article, the author goes over the most likely cause of this effect, which has been human activity. He also includes certain information of various reports over how the climate of the US might look in the future, and lists the consequences that might arise. At last, he also mentions new scientific advances that have provided more concrete reasons to believe that climate change is due to human activity as well as the global statistic of CO2 concentration and surface temperature.

How does it relate to what we learned?

In lesson 4.4, we learned about climate change, and what causes it. "As Carbon Dioxide emissions increase, the concentration of it in the atmosphere increases constantly, as shown in the graph above. The higher the concentration of this gas means that there will be a higher amount of long wave radiation absorbed. As more long wave radiation is absorbed, temperatures start to increase in the world" (4.4: Climate Change). In this quote, I basically explained why Carbon Dioxide is a main factor that causes climate change, and in the article that I read, they also emphasize how human activity has led to higher Carbon Dioxide emissions and therefore an increase in temperatures. Greenhouse gases are those gases that have the ability to basically trap the long wave radiation (heat) that is reflected from earth's surface. The higher amount of long wave radiation waves that are trapped, the higher the temperature will be. The effect of these gases vary on the capacity they have of absorbing long wave radiation and the concentration of them in the atmosphere. For example, Carbon Dioxide's capacity is not as big as the one in Methane, but it is so concentrated in our planet that it causes enhanced greenhouse effects.

What do I think?

I believe that climate change is real, and that this process has definitely been accelerated by human activity. The article I read definitely provides evidence of this. "For the warming over the last century, there is no convincing alternative explanation supported by the extent of the observational evidence" (Wuebbles). There is no other possible justification found for this drastic temperature change across the world that is not human activity. Even though it is not totally proved, the article also gives the most likely reason that is behind this explicitly. "Continued growth in human-made emissions of CO2 over this century and beyond would lead to an atmospheric concentration not experienced in tens to hundreds of millions of years" (Wuebbles). Based on this information and what we have studied, it seems that it is more than evident that human activity has led to climate change, and it is time that as a global community, we start cooperating and reducing the amounts of this greenhouse gas that is being emitted into the atmosphere. I want to be able to raise awareness at least within the people that surround me, and to do that, I have all the corresponding evidence to point to human activity as the main cause of climate change. The article even gives specific details to show how the increased CO2 concentration is affecting our world. "The global atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration is now everywhere more than 400 parts per million (ppm), a level that last occurred about 3 million years ago, when both global average temperature and sea level were significantly higher than today" (Wuebbles). I believe that if I am able to back up my claims with the shocking facts that I just read about, I will be able to convince people about how devastating this problem is for our planet and why it is being caused.

Personally, I feel that an attribute that I have to work on is being open-minded. I am normally a bit stubborn, and I hate to change my points of views or accept other people's ideas that are different from mine. I believe that being open-minded is a key attribute in today's world, because teamwork is extremely important to be able to succeed at many jobs and projects, and if I remain thinking that my ideas are better than others, I think I will have a hard time when working under leaders in my future.

Even though this assignment was one of many learning maps that were done during these two years, I feel that my work on this Learning Map was exceptional. I remember that I took all the time that was necessary to create really detailed notes, and I even included many visual aids in order to aid my learning process. I was very motivated that day and I feel that my job on that Learning Map was phenomenal. I do not think that anyone could do a better job on a Learning Map, and I feel really proud of it. Even though this was not the most complicated task, I did not include the labs because we received a lot of help from Mr. O and Mrs. Swanson, and I did absolutely everything on this learning map with no help. I feel proud of every single assignment that I did in this two-year course, as I feel that I did a superb job in this class all-round, and all of my works had a very good quality. I also have to mention that I feel extremely proud that during my first IB Biology Semester Exam with Mr. O, I was able to get a 100% as a grade, which was hard as I barely had experience with IB, and I had to study a lot.
