His father had just came back from a concentration camp called Dachau, and his family had been told to leave Germany by the Nazis twice.He had been invisible in the sense of because he had the yellow star of David, meaning he was a yew no "real" Germans would talk or do anything with them cause they were seen as a disease that nobody wanted. They were now on the ship to Cuba. 
 Isabel- What has happened to Isabel so far is that there was a riot and that Cuba had called in the police and were arresting people after they throw rocks and other objects and her father had been one of the rioters and he was beaten badly but Isabel and her grand-dad had helped him to get home.
