-Most teachers in the UK are in favour of banning mobile phones in the classroom, according to research by Teacher Tapp and Kennisnet. Some do not even want them in the school, including during break time, they say.
-The main reason for a ban is the degree of distraction caused by a mobile phone, the survey found. In primary education this is 54 per cent, in secondary education it is 75%.
-More than half of secondary school teachers in the Netherlands would like to see a ban on mobile phones in the classroom for students up to 18 years old. For 41%, policy dictates that the mobile phone goes in the phone bag; for 5%, the mobile is not allowed at all.
-Logging into the ELO, looking for information on the Internet, using exercise and quiz apps and listening to music during independent work are among the most common activities. This occurs among teachers whose policy is to allow students to keep their phones with them, but also among teachers who have banned them (although the group where a ban applies is not large).
-Teachers should be able to decide for themselves whether or not to allow students to use their cell phones in the classroom, according to a survey of teachers and staff at a Pennsylvania school by the American Association of School Administrators (AASA).
-Teachers often fail to follow school-wide policies that apply to all classes and which all colleagues adhere to, making it difficult for them to keep order in schools. -Cell phones should be banned in elementary and secondary schools, says the Dutch Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA). At present, schools are making their own rules for this, but the party believes that this leads to a lack of clarity. CDA MP Réne Peters: "Young people grow up thinking they can multitask, but they can't".
-Also, a ban provides extra class time "because the teacher doesn't have to fuss every hour until those things are in the bag." The CDA also thinks it will ensure better school results. An earlier study by education agency DUO confirmed that: smartphones in the classroom lead to lower grades and reduced language and reading skills.
-MP Peters: It is not like someone from The Hague is going to say, 'if you have a phone in class, you'll get punishment work'. But it is the case that the school inspection will look at a school to see how this goes.

-Cell phones are banned in the French Ministry of Education. It was a campaign promise by Emmanuel Macron: if he became president, cell phones would disappear from the classroom. Elected in 2017, the ban went into effect in September 2018. They were skeptical at first, but now teachers say it makes for more calm and concentration in class.
-Mobile phones are too distracting and can be used to take embarrassing photos and videos and send them to classmates, the Ministry of Education has said. Teenagers need to learn to use their phones consciously, and pay more attention to each other instead of their screens. A "portable" on the table is far too distracting during class, it says.
-Cell phones are not allowed out of the classroom in most French secondary schools. Cell phones are banned in the collège or lycée, where some of the students are already adults. Schools can decide how to punish teens who break the rules. That ranges from turning in the cell phone for the rest of the class period to detention or punishment.
