Officials decide where the dividing line is between Soviet and US control, creating the 38th parallel
This is significant because the 38th parallel would become the dividing point between North and South Korea and their militaries during the war.

August 15, 1945: The Republic of Korea (South) is established. Less than a month later, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North) is formed
This is significant because the creation of the two different republics would lead to disagreement on what type of government should be used. This disagreement is what started the Korean War.

June 25, 1950: Roughly 100,000 North Korean troops cross the 38th parallel, signaling the beginning of the Korean War

December 6, 1950: US Marines at the Chosin Reservoir begin their attack. Two Chinese armies have been given the task of destroying the 1st Marine Division. They are successful in driving the US troops out of North Korea. 
This is significant because about 80,000 Chinese troops were killed or wounded and the CPVF Ninth Army Group is left combat-ineffective for months. 

July 27, 1953: The Korean Armistice Agreement is signed, officially ending the Korean War. North and South Korea remain separated and stay different government types.

North Korea and South Korea are still two different nations, separated by the 38th parallel. North Korea is a dictatorship, while South Korea is a democratic state.
