Setting is more than just the time and place in this story. The setting of the smart house also serves as the main character within the story. Therefore providing an element of personification. Review the story for details that show examples of the personified house and explain how it gives an example of a human characteristic. How do the examples of personification show how the house changes, like a character would, throughout the story?

It helps us understand where the other is coming from. This is because Russia and The USA were in heated tensions and everyone was concerned. This was because of the introduction of Nuclear Weapons. The amount of destruction that was possible with only one bomb was detrimental.

There are five major announcements throughout the day in which the story takes place: The first and most important announcement tells the reader that the story takes place within a house in the future by specifying the date (August 4th, 2026) and place of the setting (a house in Allendale, California). The second announcement at 8:01 AM reveals who used to live in the house (parents who go to work and children who go to school). The third announcement at 9:15 AM affirms the fact this is a super futuristic house that even has robot mice to do all the chores. The fourth announcement at 9:05 PM presents the reader with a poem that explains the events prior to the events of the story. The fifth and final announcement indicates to the reader that time still continues even after the destruction caused by the atomic bomb.

The times give us lots of insight into who lived in the house before the disaster and what the family was like. We know this family woke up at 7 and ate breakfast. At 2:35 the family played games together and ate, we can assume they were close. At 4 the nursery comes to life, this shows that kids used to live in the house. At 9:05 a voice spoke to the woman revealing that her name was Mrs McClellan.

Examples of personification show how the house changes like a character would because the house showed emotion and reactions through the events that happened in the story. An example is that when the nuclear blast hit the house the house was protecting itself as if it were a human.

1. Technology runs the house, after the family died and the house was on fire the kitchen continued to make food and the voice clock continued to announce the date, this shows that the technology had everything done for them.
2. When the kitchen sighs at the end of the story and the voice clock sings throughout the story. The house is also protective of the family, and during the fire it tries to save them. The house is described to have thoughts when waiting for the family to come home, wondering who is approaching and who is outside.

Surprisingly, the story takes place over a relatively short period of time. We know this because of the various announcements the house makes, going from August 4th to 5th at the beginning and end of the story. The announcements help us tell that it has been a good time since the area of Allendale, California got nuked as shown by the fact that the insurance, electric, and water bills have not been paid and the water supplies have been exhausted. We also know that the story takes place in the future based off the date that the house repeats over and over

The house has a voice, which is more directly personified than many other forms of personification. The house also is given "emotions" to it by the narrator. It's also interesting how they made all the functions of the house little animals as opposed to like... Roombas, making it more relatable. The house gets "panicked" and "dies" at the end like a character.

The house is first given the human language of English, which it uses to communicate to the inhabitants of the house (that are no longer there). The house is also given the human trait of self-preservation or protection of its "family" when the house closes its window blinds and draws its shades due to the wildlife outside. Bradbury elaborates on this idea of self-preservation when the house attempts to extinguish the fire, even going so far as to make the house yell "Fire, fire, fire!" as if the house is a person that is trapped in a burning building. These examples show how the house goes from being concerned about the well-being of its inhabitants to being more concerned for the well-being of itself as it burns.
