While editing, I opted to incorporate a flashback into one of the scenes to enhance clarity for the viewers. I chose to create a contrast between the present, using colder lighting, and the past, employing warmer lighting, to distinguish between the two timelines. To make the test shot more engaging and captivating despite the absence of dialogue, I included music in the background.

I experimented with handheld techniques during filming, but upon reviewing the footage at home, I noticed significant shakiness that didn't align with my intended outcome. The library scene suffered from the same shakiness due to being handheld, but I managed to salvage it by applying a stabilizer during the editing process, making it usable.

Today, during our shoot, unexpected rain began, prompting me to seize the opportunity. I chose to capture my first scene in the rain to depict the character's profound isolation upon discovering her pregnancy. I believe this will vividly convey the sadness and shock she experiences. Additionally, the rain will enhance the visual beauty of the scene, complementing the story I aim to tell.

To ensure a successful shoot without risking damage to the equipment, I opted to use my water-resistant camera, the Camera Mark II. I was uncertain if the Panasonic 180 camera was waterproof, hence the decision to mitigate any potential harm.

Reasons for some of my camera shot and angle for the first scene and library scene

The opening shot features an Extreme Wide Shot, employing a panning movement to establish the character's location and the time of day. It's followed by an Over-the-Shoulder Mid Shot, focusing on the pregnancy test, crucial for viewers to grasp the storyline. A deliberate slow-motion sequence accompanies the character's entrance into the library, drawing the audience's attention to her rather than the surroundings. A close shot from the opposite side of the bookshelf captures the emotive expression on her face.

Furthermore, a long shot frames the actor while sitting and sleeping on the couch, capturing her entire body's movement. To capture the book she was reading, I positioned myself on the floor. The choice of 'Street Wise Book' signifies the character's quest to navigate life, contemplating dropping out of school and her ability to persevere.

Additionally, an Over-the-Shoulder panning shot in the library scene reveals the time on her phone, indicating when she fell asleep and woke up. Transitioning between these times, I captured the rain through the classroom door, symbolizing the passage of time. Each shot sequence aims to encapsulate a day in the life of the character.

To initiate this scene, I opted for a close shot of the running shower, aiming to set the scene's location and hint at the forthcoming events. Following this, I used an extreme close-up of the actor washing her hands, serving a dual purpose of signaling her presence in the shower while preserving the visual narrative without explicitly showing her within it.

To transition smoothly, I employed a black fade-out effect, shifting to the mirror scene where the actor's reflection captures her entire face and emotions. This choice not only enhances visual appeal but also aligns with the storytelling I envisioned. Additionally, I introduced a blue tint to the lighting, creating a cold, distinct ambiance compared to other scenes. This alteration contributes depth to the story and complements the overall mise-en-scène.

The opening shot introduces the setting with an establishing shot, emphasizing the character's identity as a devoted student who finds solace in books. This is followed by a close-up that captures her profound frustration and sadness, vividly portraying the intensity of her emotions through her tears. Subsequently, a long shot portrays her departure from the lobby, her visible frustration palpable as she heads towards her car. Transitioning seamlessly with a hard cut, the scene progresses as she enters her vehicle, signifying continuity. Within the confines of the car, a zoom-in focuses sharply on her face, accentuating the depth of her emotions as she succumbs to tears, allowing viewers to keenly perceive her overwhelming frustration and anguish.

Should I secure funding for this project, I believe it holds the potential to captivate both young teenagers and adults. Beyond being engaging, the story also serves as an educational and therapeutic narrative. It resonates particularly with young adults facing similar challenges, navigating overwhelming situations where the choices between continuing education, parenthood, or considering abortion can feel daunting and unclear. This project has the opportunity to offer insight and guidance to those encountering these dilemmas, providing them with a platform to explore and understand their options.

Overall, the experience of shooting this test footage was both challenging and enlightening. It required me to creatively piece together visuals to craft a narrative that could resonate with viewers even without dialogue. Handling impromptu shooting in the rain taught me valuable improvisational skills. As an independent filmmaker, I also delved into the essential aspects of production, such as understanding the need for documentation like risk assessments and location permits for future projects. The directing class proved instrumental in honing my skills to professionally guide actors on set. Working with a reliable actor significantly eased the shooting process, facilitated by our established rapport, allowing for comfortable planning and execution of the shoot. While minor delays, such as the actor's occasional lateness, occurred, effective communication enabled us to navigate and adjust our schedules accordingly.
