Boat trip on the Danube

For everyone who visits the city, it's nearly an obligation to board one of the many boats docked all along the bank to go on a 45- minute trip up and down the river, taking in the sights, sunning on deck and enjoying a cool drink, courtesy of the crew. Looking over the gunwale, it was the murkiness of the waters the thing that strikes you the most. That and the supposedly strong undercurrents that dissuade bathers from going into their waters. I saw a few people lying on the banks and basking in the sun, though.

Erudite bums

Roaming around the city it's hard not to notice the great number of homeless people here, may of whom bed out in parks and green areas. Unlike the stew bums with gin blossoms and blotchy noses who you typically see in Madrid, here many homeless people while away the hours reading instead of drinking their lives away.

These iron sculpted shoes on the bank represent the thousands of Jews who were shot and thrown into the waters by the Nazi police in Budapest. The victims of the execution would be forced first to remove their shoes so these could be reused.
