It seems to be set in a local context as the people in the photo are local. Our students should be familiar with the idea of going for hikes in nature reserves due to learning journeys. Some may even have gone with their parents

Pointers for Setting VTC

Just to recap, remember that for VTC setting,

(1) ask the Essential Question - Is the visual text really working as a visual text or is it simply a poster containing information in a more visually appealing way. A VT must grab your attention to focus on certain info, contain salient points, drive home a message etc.

(2) Check the placement, arrangement and layout of the visuals and text? Neat arrangement of text and images does not mean it is usable because it is too predictable. Nothing grab readers' attention. Is this serving the purpose as a VT?

(3) Check if there is a distinctive writer's voice/style. Why did the writer choose to depict the information in this way? What is his purpose/intent? How is this effective in getting the message across?

(4) Check the language use. Is it rich enough for you to test inferential comprehension or is the text in VT1 very literal and direct?
