After taking the competency test, I realized there was a lot more to school counselor’s role. There is still a lot that I need to learn and that was pretty clear. It was clear that the mindset of school counselors differ a lot from other professions within a school community. I did really well on this section. I think the biggest section that I didn’t do as well in is the planning and assessment section. Particularly the “B-PF 2. Demonstrate understanding of educational systems, legal issues, policies, research and trends in education”. (ASCA,2019) I plan to learn as much as possible throughout my classes so I will be able to achieve and do well within this section. I also need to approve in the cultural aspect. I think I just need be culturally aware of cultural differences. I can also do research. I think the biggest way to learn about different cultures is learning as I experience these different cultures.  I will also need to work on collaborating with my community. I can learn a lot from them, but sometimes I get nervous to ask for help or sometimes I get too comfortable and think that I don’t need to ask for help. These are personal things that I need and am working on. Overall, I think there is a lot that I still need to learn and look forward to learning these items throughout the course.

I think they can serve as a voice for their students by building the bridge between students talking to their teachers or parents when they don’t feel comfortable doing it alone. I also think they serve as a resource by providing different resources that are outside of the school campus and within the community. I believe that these standards help serve as a guide for school counselors. It helps professionals stay within their boundaries. I also believe it helps protects school counselors and instills trust for students, families, and law enforcement.
