This life size glass sleeping figure was made as part of an Arts Council funded residency at the Glass Hub in UK. The artwork was made to highlight the growing number of hidden and invisible homeless people there now are. Jerram partnered with 1625 Independent People, an agency that works with young people in the area who have faced homelessness in order to raise money for the Early Doors campaign. It was exhibited in Stokes Croft, Park Street, and Welsh Back.

The goal of the artwork was to show the harsh conditions people on the streets face, yet how often the problem goes unnoticed. Artist Luke Jerram explains:
“For every person you see sleeping on the streets, there are many others sleeping in hostels, squats and other forms of unsatisfactory and insecure accommodation. I was interested to see whether the sculpture would be ignored and treated like street furniture as homeless people often are in a city. I hope the artwork will raise awareness of the problem and that the public will feel moved to support the charity, to make a difference.”

The entire sculpture is made out of glass, which is to depict how most people try to see the homeless as invisible. Jerram managed to attract people's attention through a transparent work of art down on the bustling streets where everyone can see and helped them realized that this artwork is linked to the way they see and treat homeless people, thereby raising their awareness about them.

Shrouded in a blanket made of glass is a vulnerable and fragile form. This perfectly describes what state a homeless person is in: unsheltered and helpless before every wandering eyes. Through this image , Jerram hoped that people will be able to see the state that the homeless people are in in order for them to reach an understanding and sympathize with the homeless people.

Through this, Jerram tried to make people see that anyone can become homeless, including them, thereby stopping the discrimination against homeless people and instead show compassion towards them.

However, because this amazing sculpture is only placed in a few streets in the UK, it is going to be hard to raise people's awareness on a large scale, thereby limiting its possibilities and effects it can have on probably many other people. The sculpture can be placed in many other great cities around the world instead of just the UK and it can serve a much greater value in public's awareness.

In conclusion, despite its drawback, I think the sculpture still managed to depict its full meaning in order to raise awareness, though only small, as it has managed to help the 1625 Independent People organization saved 74 young people from ending up on the street and raised fund to help many homeless people. Now whenever you see homeless people, please think of this work of art to remind yourself of how to treat them properly and get them the help they deserve
