In the end, they came up with the Missouri Compromise. It stated that  1. To him it showed that Senator Stephen Douglas was plotting to make Kansas a slave state.  Because he was so disgusted by Douglas was doing, Sumner wrote a speech insulting Douglas. He also insulted Senator Andrew P. Butler. Many copies of the speech were printed and passed around. Some people congratutulated him but others shook their heads. Two days later, Bulter's nephew, attacked Sumner with a metal tipped cane. After the other senators pulled the nephew off, Sumner was bloody and unconscious.
