Chapter 1 Stolen Letters

In Chapter one the main character's name is Violet and her mom and dad this was in 1920 Violet's mom hid letters from her sister Chloe that were sent to her so she took some of them and read them. There was a picture with her brother Steven and her sister Chloe they were teenagers in the picture Violet's friend died from influenza (the Spanish flu) women can't vote at this time.

The theme of the chapter is when you think when you think all hope every bit of it is lost it can find you.When Violet gets off the train she asked a police officer for some directions and he said that exit at the top of the stairs but he stopped her so she ran out. She ran into a boy who was handing out newspapers so she got out of there. She slipped on horse poop and met Myrtle.

Chapter 4 Henry Street

Violet and Myrtle find Henry Street and the Settlement House but Chloe wasn't there. A guy told them that Chloe is in Washington DC Violet and Myrtle don't have the money.

Chapter 5 Hobie And The Breakman

Myrtle and Violet are trying to get to Washington to find Chloe. They get help from a guy named Hobie the Hobo so they get on the back of the train. Then they arrive in Pennsylvania and they go to sleep. When they wake up they get on the train but a breakman stop them and buy it had to pay him.

Chapter 6 it all comes down to Tennessee

In chapter 6 Violet and Myrtle arrived in Washington DC. Myrtle takes Violet into an alley so they can get cleaned then they go to a suffragist home and they get directions to where Chloe might be.

Chapter 7 heading to Nashville

Violet and Myrtle go downstairs for breakfast and see Mr. Martin sitting there drinking coffee. They learn all about how the right to vote for women has come down to Tennessee, and that's where Chloe is. Miss Dexter doesn't really like Myrtle we can tell by the way she treats her. Mr. Martin takes Violet to send a telegram to her parents to say she's okay. They all decided to go to Nashville together. When they got on the train, the Suffragists had their own car, but the conductor told Myrtle she can't be with them, she has to go to the Colored Car. Mr. Martin stood up for Myrtle, but in the end she had to go back to the colored car and Violet felt sad.

Chapter 8 The Jim Crow Car

Myrtle is making her way to the colored car in the back of the train. Once she finally gets there, she meets an old woman, Mrs. Merganser, who used to be a slave. The woman told Myrtle that the amendment for women to vote would not include colored women. Myrtle is very stubborn and determined that colored women will have the right to vote.

Chapter 10

Violet helps a woman who had fallen and was upset about losing her son in the war, and Violet gets angry about the way women have to sit in silence while men make decisions that affect them. It is unequal and unfair that women are not allowed to be a part of the decision-making process. We meet Miss Charlotte Rowe and she accompanies Violet from the train station to the hotel where she is staying. When Violet walks toward the entrance of the hotel, she is told by Miss Rowe that women use a different entrance at the side of the building. It is unequal that women and men cannot enter by the same entrance, and it is unfair that women have to enter at the side of the building, as if they aren’t important enough to enter at the front.

Chapter 11 finding Chloe

In Chapter 11 we see the theme “inequality is injustice.” Violet is hungry and wants to find somewhere to eat, but is told she can’t eat in one of the hotel restaurants because it is for men only. It is unequal and unfair that men and women cannot eat in the same restaurant, especially given that there isn’t a restaurant just for women. She also realizes that the woman who pinned a red rose on her at the train station was an Anti, and she was staying in an Anti room at the hotel. She finds out she can eat sandwiches if she goes to the Anti's meeting. As she listens to them speak, she learns how they are getting men to change their minds about voting on the Susan B. Anthony Amendment. Violet overheard some people talking and they said, "Mayhew" and she got really excited to finally see Chloe! Chloe and Violet finally see each other and Violet tells Chloe she had ran away from home to find her. Chloe is really tired and doesn't seem to be much help to find Myrtle or Mr. Martin

Chapter 9 Mr.Martin's Escape

In Chapter 9, Violet and Myrtle realize that Mr. Martin is running away from the police. They don't know what he did wrong. Two men called Palmer agents tried to find Mr. Martin, and they question the suffragists about him and accuse the women of not being very intelligent because they are female. The two men treated the women like they were dumb. We see examples of inequality with the Jim Crow car and Myrtle being separated from the rest of the group. Another example of inequality is between men and women, we can tell the agents don't think women should get the right to vote.

Mr. Martin and Myrtle go find lunch they go to four Drug stores when Myrtle suggest that she would eat in the alley way. Google find a hotel like saying to stay in. In a alley called dead horse alley. Red violet starts spying.
