Battle of Attu Island

this was a small battle that was the culmination of the aleutian islands campaign, with the us basically fighting japan for control of the attu and kiska islands, which the japanese had established garrisons on, basically to divert us troops from midway, and could also serve as stepping stones for an invasion of the U.S. but was basically ignored up until 1943, when the U.S. decided to reinvade, fighting relatively light japanese resistance, with their main foes being the cold and terrain, fighting in a heavy fog, searching every foxhole with inadequate equipment, with the cold killing more soldiers than enemy fire, this campaign took several months, but through intense effort, the us managed to corner the Japanese troops slowly but surely, and prepared for a final desperate counterattack, surprising the Americans and pushing to the fallback positions before being eventually overwhelmed with American firepower, with almost 2000 casualties and only 30 prisoners, with more than 1000 American troops dying, this had no major impact on the war, but helped the us push back the Japanese and foreshadowed how the rest of the island hopping campaign was shaping up to be

battle of guadalcanal was a series of clashes between the americans and japanese on the solomon islands, where the us was fighting to retake an airfield that was menacing American troops in new guniea, with the us counterattacking to take said airfield, and shockingly they encountered little resistance, renaming the airfield henderson field, but failing to but then, the japanese attacked, striking in a night battle, they destroyed so many American ships the sea lane between guadalcana and Florida island was nicknamed ironbottom sound but the us responded with the USS hornet and enterprise, clashing with the japanese and sinking several ships, with that being all action for several months, aside from the sinking of the USS wasp and the Japanese resupply effort, until another major engagement, while technically a victory for the Japanese, lead to the loss of nearly 100 aircraft and heavily damaged both of their carriers, giving the Americans time to breathe, with the climax of this whole operation being the actual battle of Guadalcanal where the us destroyed a Japanese battleship, strengthening the us in the southern solomons, this whole operation showcased the skill of the us in combined arms, and the endurance of the marines on the island, with the japense unable to ever fully overwhelm the American defenders, eventually evacuating with the last japanese holdouts being wiped out. This gave the us a strong position in the solomons and set back the Japanese 24,000 troops

the battle of the coral sea was a major battle between the japanese and the US, as well as australia, with neither forces actually sighting each other, merely attacking over the horizon instead, with the japanese engaged in an island hopping campaign, before being eventaully taken by surprise in the coral sea, which alerted the japanese, who responbed by advancing on their position, the two carrier fleets got within 70 nm of each other but didn't detect each other, instead launching aerial assualts, both sides suffered heavy aircraft losses, causing the japanese to retreat, marking the first time the japanese forces in the pacific had been forced to retreat since pearl harbor

this was the battle that was fought to take control over the south part of Russia for control of the city of Stalingrad in Southern Russia. It stopped the German advance into the Soviet Union and marked the turning of the tide of war in favor of the Allies. the way the Germany had lost was the lack of the planning and more of the poor tactical planning that was executed.

KYLE'S COMMENT: Basically the germans just ran out of steam, and because of hitler's hubris, got themselves encircled and destroyed

40,000-70,000 is the estimated death toll, I would say this one was far less justified than Hiroshima, with the atomic bomb's power already demonstrated and the Japanese already drafting up a surrender, the Americans could have waited for better weather or struck a clearly military target rather than nagasaki

90,00-160,000, I feel like this being the first bombing, and with the U.S. having no real idea about anything that was going on internally, and despite the fact that the soviets had a role with their invasion of japan, I feel like the bombs were justified in the sense that if the bombing of japan prevented an invasion of the home islands, then it was undeniably justified. But if the japanse could have surrendered another way, or if there was anything else that could have been done, that would have been more moral. obviously, carpet bombing a city is a horrible thing to do, but if it ended the war, there was no other choice
