While researching the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, I learned about the event that inspired its commemoration. On November 25, 1960, the Mirabal sisters were brutally murdered for being women and activists. Their only crime was fighting for their rights against the Dominican dictator Rafael Leónidas Trujillo. I found this event shocking, as well as the need to promote the fight against this great scourge.

Reading the United Nations' definition of the elimination of violence against women in its resolution 48/104 of 1993 was gratifying in its breadth and comprehensiveness, defining this type of violence as: "any act of gender-based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or in private life." After presenting what I have read on the subject, I clearly see the need to continue publicizing what has happened, as well as publicly denouncing the people who promote and/or carry out violence against women.

There are several ways I can contribute to the fight against gender based violence. Personally, I can participate in marches and workshops to raise awareness, I can also support organizations that work to end violence against women, and volunteer to help children whose mothers are victims of abuse. We can make a small contribution to help make society a better place.

The 25th of November is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. It is not just a symbolic date, but a chance to learn and think about a serious reality. In the past, this type of violence was hidden at home and people stayed silent. Today there are laws, support services and more social awareness. This evolution shows that the problem is not inevitable, and that change is possible.

To answer the question “What can you do to learn about the 25th of November?”, the first step is to get informed in a clear and honest way. You can read reports, go to talks, listen to real stories and understand the different forms of violence, not only physical violence. Information helps you see warning signs, avoid stereotypes and speak about the topic with respect.

From an ethical and personal point of view, change starts in daily life. You don’t need to belong to a movement or use a label to help. You can contribute by respecting others, not accepting controlling behaviour and supporting people who need to talk without judging them. It also means questioning old ideas and teaching the people around you that relationships should be based on freedom, dignity and equality.

It is not about changing the world in one day. It is about taking a simple responsibility: learn, listen and act with coherence. Every small action makes a safer and more conscious environment. This is a real way to contribute so the 25th of November is not only a date, but an attitude all year long.
