In the play "The Crucible" Arthur Miller wrote about the Salem Witch Trials as a response to the modern day hunt for communists. It all began with the Puritans who moved to the New World to pursue their strict religion of purity. One aspect that sparked the Witch Hunt was their strong belief that Satan was alive and walking among them on Earth. Because of this, the Puritans regularly blamed any bad events on the work of the Devil and thought he was recruiting others to serve him as witches. People used this fear as an excuse to accuse their enemies and neighbors of witchcraft for personal benefit and teenage girls were so bored that they accused people left and right to gain popularity.

I thought the background to the Crucible was fascinating and was shocked at the small steps that quickly escalated to a deadly climax. It was also interesting to observe how similarly chaotic the Salem Witch Trials were to the Red Scare many years later. It just goes to prove that history can and will repeat itself.
