-Before, saw suicide as a psychological problem, Durkheim extends it to a social problem
-Suicide = heath barometer of society (social bond)
- Wanted sociology to be seen as own discipline -> brought scientific and structuralist themes . Natural science methodology combined with qual. observations.
Question 2:
- As Durkheim says that social bonds determine level of suicide in a society... can use rates to show whether or not the society is connected
- Rate = quantitative measure (applying NS methods)
- Found that social factors ie econ stress, religion, divorce  etc affected rates

- Saying that social structures cause suicide puts the study into the realist/ nominalist debate 
- Also, treating peoples actions as complex forms of natural events (scientifically explained and casual relationship) → determinism vs voluntarism
