He is very arrogant and won't take suggestions from Timber and doesn't like being questioned, as we see toward the end of the story. When Dr. Ganderbai asks if Harry may have dreamt up the snake, his reaction is this, "'Are you  telling me I'm a liar?' he shouted. ...'Why, you dirty little sewer rat!' ...'You dirty black--'" and he doesn't stop yelling until Timber intervenes (Dahl 345). His coarseness combined with his superiority complex make for a character that is easily disliked by readers.
