What was your first experience with race?

The first experience with race that i can remember is when I went to Valley Christian Elementary School. First my grandmother wanted me to go there so bad because it was a white folks school so in her mind it was a good school. Then when I got to the school I had to take a test in order to move to the next grade because my mother started me in first grade when I was 4 by lying about my age so she could go to work and couldn't afford daycare or get assistance for daycare. So I had to take a test to move on to the third grade, I took the test and missed one point and rather than allowing me to retake the test the school put me back in second grade. Then in class I was constantly overlooked by the teacher and my answers were never validated. I was hit and spit on by many of the white students when I told i usually ended up in detention. So basically I spent two years almost every lunch and break in detention. When I got older I realized that was the schools way of keeping segregated. It's such a long story but this is the just of it. And it was a good school because when I left in the 4th grade I had a 10th grade reading level and really low self esteem as well as an inferiority complex but boy could I read.

I felt like I was not good enough. Like I was ugly, everything I did was wrong. Like I would never have friends. Like I was not a normal person and did not deserve to be treated with respect. Like I had to do tricks or some how entertain or benefit the white people to be treated with decency. I just felt less than and there was nothing I could ever do to be accepted and nothing I could ever to to ever be as good as them.

Have you ever talked about the experience?

I did talk about it with my family, however they were too traumatized themselves to understand how deeply it impacted me. Actually, this activity helped me to realize how those experiences stuck with me and affect the way I look at myself now 20+ years later.

How have your early experiences with race shaped your worldview?

During this activity, I have realized that experience of alway feeling less than and not good enough early on in life is most likely a huge reason why I settled for less in my late teens and early 20's to the point when I made decisions that affected the quality of my life because I simply did not feel good enough and there was nothing I could do to ever be good enough so I just took what was left over or given to me.
