"After that came a layer of Molyneux's Italian Paste to make her skin as white as bleached linen. It made her resemble a corpse."

Why were people of color treated so unfairly back then? Everyone is equal, and everyone is human, so why didn't they take that into account before mistreating so many innocent beings? This discrimination made people like Madam Lockton try to make their skin as pale as possible. I know that if Madam and many other people were in the position of a slave, they wouldn't be able to bare it, after a life of having everything done for them. Because of this intense discrimination, I believe that it is extremely unfair to people of color to attempt to make your skin lighter than it's original color. This was a horrific time period for people of color, and I am beyond relieved that they finally have the justice they deserve.

"The door to Lady Seymour's bedchamber was just opening. As I went to pass by, she grabbed my arm. "Quick, child", she cried. "Help me!"

For a girl who has been through so much hardship, and feels so alone at this point in her life, she is extremely empathetic towards others. In order for a mere child to save an adult, a lot of bravery and awareness in necessary. It may be difficult for Isabel to summon these emotions, because of the death of her parents, and her sister, Ruth being sold. Though it may be hard for her to express these feelings towards anyone, Lady Seymour has exponentially aided Isabel in her journey, and If I were Isabel, I would do the same to someone who had helped me so much.

"It was lonely sleeping without that fool doll." Isabel lost Ruth's doll in the fire. The doll was all Isabel had left of anything. In an earlier chapter, Isabel had thought Ruth was being almost childish for not being able to fall asleep without her doll. Ruth is a child, and it's not unusual for children to have stuffed toys. Isabel is now in a similar position as her sister was, where she had trouble falling asleep without the doll too. For Isabel, there is a much deeper meaning. Ruth wanted her doll just to fall asleep as comfort. Isabel wanted the doll for the same reason, but also because she missed Ruth.

"He said he was sorry that he could only die once for his country." This was a quote from Nathan Hale, a rebel. When Nathan Hale said this, it showed how loyal he was to his side. He wanted to die for his country multiple times, so that he would be able to help them win the war for as long as possible. A person can only die once, but being able to die multiple times would mean you were constantly giving up your life for a greater cause. Nathan Hale not only wanted to give his life up for his country, but he wanted to give it up many times.

"Near 500 homes were destroyed that night, plus shops, churches, and stables." This quote made me wonder who started the fire. I don't believe it was an accident, because it didn't seem possible that one accidental fire could burn down so much of New York. It could have been the Patriots. By burning down New York, the Patriots would have an advantage. The British would be without shelter and weapons, an it would be a good time to attack. The downside to this is that the Patriots lose their homes and shops. The Patriots are also in rough condition, as the British had just recently attacked them. I don't think it could have been a Loyalist because they would have nothing to gain.

The author use a simile to show Isabel's feelings to emphasize how much work was expected of a slave. Slaves had to work so much, sometimes doing very energy-consuming tasks. A donkey is an animal that is very durable and people usually tend to overwork them.

"Madam scowled into her cup. 'You favor her over me, Elihu. It's unseemly." AA - Elihu is trying to convince Mrs. Lockton that Isabel should go work for Lady Seymore. He is a little more humane than Mrs. Lockton, as he disagreed with the selling of Ruth. Mr. Lockton insisted that Isabel goes to Lady Seymore immediately, to help her with her German soldiers. Madam Lockton is upset by this because she wants someone to do house chores for her. I didn't really understand this part because we learned previously that Madam Lockton can actually cook well. Isabel would be better at Lady Seymore's house because Lady Seymore is much nicer and much more reasonable than Mrs. Lockton.

This quote showed me that a part of Isabel is still in her. The caring, selfless, part. Because Ruth was Isabel's only person left and now she is gone, Ruth's doll sort of served as a keepsake. It helped Isabel honor and remember her sister. But, now that it is gone, will Isabel still think about and remember her? Or will she have a change of heart, and decide she cant spend her whole life feeling like Ruth's selling was her fault, and try to forget her?

Isabel repeats this phrase to herself as she preps to go into the prison to feed Curzon. Despite these voices in her head, she still continues to get ready. This is important as it shows she is becoming her self again. She is rebelling not only against the unfair system but also against her inner thoughts. She is starting to get over her depression, and is seemingly regaining her bravery. Hopefully, she returns to her old self and tries to fight for her freedom again.

At this moment, Isabel realizes that Lady Seymour knows that Isabel takes her scraps to the prison to feed the British prisoners. I think Isabel felt ashamed when she said this, as it made it seem like she would much rather the prisoners eat the food than the sick Lady Seymour. However, she approved saying that it was a "fine and Christian thing". Now that Lady Seymour knows, I wonder if she will try and cover for Isabel when she is gone.
