As soon as Jonas got chosen as the Receiver of Memory the conflict began. He realized that life has a greater meaning and that everyone shouldn't just all be the same. Due to this, he starts to form a plan with The Giver. The plan was that Jonas would fake his own death and escape the Community so that everyone would be able to feel real emotions and memories. However, this is also what led to Jonas's death. This is a Man vs Society external conflict.

“The worst part of holding the memories is not the pain. It's the loneliness of it. Memories need to be shared.” This is important because even though holding the memories is an extremely difficult task, what's harder is having to lie to people and keep everything a secret. This is why Jonas escaped; so that everyone could experience true emotions and memories.

Figurative Language

"He saw nothing ahead except the endless ribbon of road unfolding in twisting narrow curves." This is a Metaphor because it's comparing the never-ending road and a strand of ribbon. In this scene, Jonas was walking to Elsewhere, but he doesn't make it. My second figurative language is "He could hear the crack of the bone." This is an onomatopoeia because cracking a bone is a sound. In this scene, The Giver gives Jonas a memory of sledding down a hill, but he crashes and breaks his leg instead. My last one is "Jonas thought Larissa had drifted into sleep". This is a hyperbole because it is an exaggeration since you cant actually drift to sleep. In this scene, Jonas was doing volunteer hours at The House of the Old and helping an elderly named Larissa.
