My first few memories of reading are trying to decipher what the big green signs on the highway said and the book Little House on the Prairie. My mom used to punish me by taking away bedtime stories at night, and it hurt the most when we were reading the bright yellow paperback books about two young girls and their parents. This stage of reading made me love listening to stories and made me feel so important and old for reading such a big kid book.

During this time of my life, I was doing a lot of reading on my own but I had a bit of a love-hate relationship with books.

LOVE- I loved reading books in English. I could choose whatever genre I wanted and I understood the whole story and every detail. I read a lot of I Survived books, The Boxcar Children, and in 5th grade, I had a small obsession with books about kidnappers.

HATE-I absolutely hated books in Spanish. Every time the librarian reminded us that “all the Spanish immersion kids need to check out at least one book in Spanish” I wanted to knock down a bookshelf. I felt like I was a terrible reader because of how hard the books were. I knew I wasn’t a bad reader but it was frustrating to not be able to enjoy the story because of a language I was supposed to know.

In middle school I read like a crazy person, I checked out so many books, probably read about two series a week and for the first time, I read my absolute favorite book. In 7th grade, I read Salt to the Sea for the first time and then I read it again and then again, and again and you get what I mean. Salt to the sea fueled my crazy train till it went off the tracks in eighth grade. My obsession slowed down a bit but started up again in quarantine. I started a habit of drawing characters while reading, and I began to be a little less crazy about my reading habits.

I’ve been pretty disappointed in myself for the lack of time I have to read. I didn’t read much freshman year, and I haven’t been able to read a ton this year either. Most of the reading I do now is in the summer or during breaks like Christmas or spring break. It’s sad but understandable, I know I should put school over hobbies and I’m okay with that. Reading is like a gift now, if I get to sit down on Sunday and read for three hours, then I’m either dead or have absolutely no homework. Something i hope to read in the independent reading assignment is Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix.
