UWP 7 Pieces of Advice (Darlene Alvarado)

1) One thing I know helped me in UWP7 was being open-minded. UWP 7 introduces a lot new information so as a student it is important to be open to learning and remain focused on the content of the course.
2) Another helpful tip would be to take advantage of your resources. This could mean going to the office hours, or maybe paying more attention to Eli Review. These resources, among others, actually are super beneficial.
3) Lastly, take the class seriously. This is a great opportunity to be introduced to college-level writing, and it is much more lenient than other English classes. Really use this time to develop skills that can be useful in college.

1. Go to Office Hours. You don't have to go to all of them, but it is a great way to get to know your professor. It is also a great way to get help and have someone hear your ideas. I highly recommend it.
2. Have Fun! The class is what you make it, so try to participate as much as you can. Make friends and reach out to peers.
3. Always try your best. It will show in your assignments whether you tired or not. Know that you put in effort will really help in this class. Never give up, it is important to atleast try.

1. Over the weekend we have ample time to complete an assignment, but sometimes procrastinating can get the best of you. it has for me. I admit that I would sometimes start an assignment a day before it was due. I found myself pulling all-nighters when I chose to push it off. I know many people say to stop procrastinating but that easier said than done. I suggest that you would try to complete the assignment as soon as you can so that later you can have more free time.
2. Just because we are adapting to a new way of learning, doesn't mean you can't make friends. I would highly encourage you to try to connect to other classmates so that if you miss a class you can simply ask your friends what you did in class.

3. Ask questions. Since we are adding to a new way of learning it is more crucial now than ever to make sure that you understand what you are being asked to do. Don't be afraid to ask clarifying questions because someone might have the same ones.

1. For next year, I encourage you to take your time with your reading, annotation and writings. At the moment you may want to get the assignment over and done with but it's truly important to focus and retain the information. Know when you should take breaks and when your breaks are only setting you back.

2. Another piece of advice, would be to go to office hours. I remember not being able to make it to most of them or forgetting to, but the time I did really helped me see what direction I should with my essay. I was made more aware and was given great insight. For any of those that know they could make it should attend even if you think you don’t, you could come across the slightest aspect to bring together your work.

1) Please please please, if you are stuck on understanding a prompt and know that you will have to produce an essay based on that prompt. Ask for help, I know that asking may seem scary but not taking any action will leave you in the same hole.
2) Always take articles serious, whether the article being boring or useless, still annotate and take notes. You will be surprised on what you could use as a piece of evidence.
3) Lastly, engage in class activities. I know that some students just want to hide behind their cameras and not say a word. However, engaging in activities build relationships. Also, taking part in class activities also benefit one self. You start to built confidence when uncertainty of a topic emerges.

1. Write down the office hours, MEMORIZE when they are. Learn from my mistakes. There were moments when I wanted to attend office hours, but I forgot and once I remembered it was too late.
2. Give yourself time to write your essays, Rough Draft or Final Draft, take advantage of your time. Arrange time in your schedule, and prioritize writing your essays.
There is always room for improvement, and procrastinating can impede you from reaching your full potential.
3. Give good comments on Eli Review, put in that effort. The process of writing your comments is valuable and can help you discover more about your writing process and abilities.

1. One important piece of wisdom is to STOP procrastinating and learn to manage your time. I as a student have a hard time doing my assignments on time and I’m usually always doing everything all last minute.
2. Another piece of advice would be to make sure you give every single assignment your full potential. Treat every assignment like if it’s the FINAL draft. This is something I struggle with because I often don’t give assignments my fullest potential.
3. Also make sure to attend your professors office hours when ever you stumble upon confusion or simply because you need help. Don’t be afraid to ask for help because our professors are here to helps students like us.

Start thinking about the assignment the day you receive it, especially if you’re taking this class in the summer when it is accelerated. Give yourself time to develop questions so that you have time to go to office hours/email to get help.

It’s okay to not know what a term means in this class. Heck, I wasn’t exactly sure what synthesis was until I went to office hours. Even if you think you have an understanding of what a term means in this class, don’t be afraid to ask for clarification. The last thing you want is to submit an assignment that doesn’t meet the requirements (if you do, it’s not the end of the world either--you’ll have a chance to improve it).

This class is very forgiving. Listen to the advice that keeps coming up about how to manage your time and seek help when you’re stuck. But it's ok to make mistakes in this course. It’s better to make a mistake now and learn from it in this course than in writing courses later on.
