A man named Greg Johnson was in a protest outside the Dallas city hall, he took out an American flag and burned it. The state then arrested him and convicted him under a Texas law that outlaws flag desecration. He was sentenced to jail for one year and had a $2,000 fine. Johnson eventually appealed, saying that burning the flag is a figure of free speech, and that he had the right to express his thoughts.  
Question:
Is the burning of the American flag protected under the first amendment?
Decision:
After the case lead all the way to the supreme court, the court eventually decided that Johnson's actions were protected under the first amendment, and it was deemed as expressive content and aimed at the political issues. they believed that this did not pose a threat to anyone, it was just an expression of emotion. The case was settled in a 5-4 ruling, and the decision was written by Judge Brennan. 
Lasting Impact: 
This case was a pivotal issue, that gives people the right to express themselves. Today, this case helps us know that we are allowed to speak out against the government, whether state or federal, in a non harmful way.
