Communication (3.1)

I had to use communication skills in my placement when communicating digitally with my teacher. We had to decide my days and hours over email and text. This can be hard when it is digital and not face to face communication. Along with once I got into the classroom, we communicated on what my jobs were going to be. Also, how I would help her with anything she needed in her classroom. This communication face to face and digitally was every efficient and effective. Once I go into her classroom, I knew exactly what jobs and responsibilities I had. All I had to do was complete them everyday and help her in any way I could. This is two-way communication because she also asked me if there was anything specific, I would want to do. Along with being able to help her wherever it was needed.

The results were knowing a clear plan everyday on what I am going to do. I learned about communication through email. Along with communication in person when I arrived at her classroom. I learned about the importance of communication. I got to see how effective it is to always have an open – two-way line of communication in my placement.

A time that I took my own learning into my hands was in Teaching as a Profession 2. Over the semester there was a lot of homework that had to be done, but there was a flexible amount of time to get it done. The only problem with this was that I became easy to procrastinate and not get your work done over the multiple days provided. As an example, there was a lesson plan do at 11:59 every Thursday, so we knew when every lesson plan was due. As the semester went on it was easy to wait until Wednesday or Thursday night which resulted in poor lesson plans leading to bad grades. One thing that I learned due to Teaching as a Profession classes is to not procrastinate. Meaning when the lesson plan assignment was assigned on Thursday, I would complete it over the weekend and get together all the materials I needed. Because I did this, I was able to work with my host teacher to schedule my teaching date. This was a better outcome instead of being unprepared at the beginning of the week even though the assignment wasn’t due until later. Also, because I took my time and consideration into all parts of my lesson plans I never made a grade below a 100%. The result from learning this process is that I now apply it to every class that I take. I learned that procrastinating gets me no where in the long run, and it is better to finish my work before ethe deadline then have to stress about finishing in time. This has made me very successful in all of my classes. As a result, this makes me have more free time after school then I would have if I had close to due assignments hanging over my head all week. Because I learned this I now not only have more time, but I also get higher grades all because I learned that procrastinating feels right in the moment but creates more work later.

An example of I worked with diverse people in my workplace was when I worked with my host teacher and other teachers around her. For example, I take note to different places around the school. I assist my teacher along with other teachers that have classrooms around her. Meaning I finish all the things she needs me to do then I run over to another teacher’s room and help them as well. One thing I have learned from this is communication and time management. I had to learn to finish tasks quickly and efficiently. Once I learned this I was able to help all of the teachers in the short time I am at my placement.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
PTSD is a mental health condition that can develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. There are many misconceptions about PTSD including, only soldiers get PTSD, it is uncurable, and PTSD develops due to weakness. PTSD causes difficulties with trust, emotional regulation, memory problems, and heightened anxiety. These can all be challenging in a business situation. Some ways that can be helpful and respectful when communicating with someone with PTSD is to prioritize active listening, validate their experiences, and avoid minimizing their feelings.

I am Caroline Best, and my focus area is Teaching as a Profession. My placement is Mrs. Jacobus' class at Maryville Junior High. I help Mrs. Jacobus in ways such as taking notes to teachers, organizing materials, and passing out papers. My current job will help me for being a teacher because it gives me experience in a classroom and gives me an idea of how teachers do their job. I plan to pursue being a teacher and I plan to get there by going to college and majoring in education.
