Community College: Diablo Valley College

Major: Child and Family Development

The key to my success has been to set short-term and long-term goals to keep myself on track without becoming overwhelmed. Also, success could not be possible without the support of friends, family, professors and classmates, being there when I have questions or am in need of assistance.

Advice I can offer transfer students is to make regular appointments with your advisor before you're struggling, they want you to succeed and having regular contact can help you stay on track for graduation, completing your minor(s) and major(s) as well as planning for post-grad. Just because you can do it alone, doesn't mean you have to!! I also would say to embrace your new environment and immerse yourself, try new hobbies, explore your neighborhood, and if you're working, try a new/fun/different job than your major to prevent burnout and explore new arenas.

Also, emotional support has been a great part of my success, and thank you to my children, my husband, my siblings, my parents, and my in laws, I've never lack of it. Without their support, school would've looked very different for me.

My advice to transfer students is to stay organized and find a support system. It could be a mentor, and advisor, another transfer student, or anyone else who can serve as a guide and point out to different resources available on campus.
