Jeannette is naive as a young child and this is shown many times throughout the book. For example how she always believes her father;s promises of finding gold and getting rich, and how she believes all his stories about him being really cool in the air force when he's clearly exaggeration stories and making false promises. Her naivety is also when she follows Billy into his house and doesn't realize exactly what he's trying to do.
