I have family members who are both of lighter and darker skin complexion so I find myself to be stuck in the middle when it comes to my own privilege. Professionally, we are taught to act a different way in order to fit the status quo. Some experience code-switching. For years, we lacked self-confidence due to a lack of support from our peers and educators.

In 1952, Trujillo would travel to Spain in order to manipulate Spaniards to migrate to the Dominican Republic. 

He lightened his own skin using whitening makeup.

He insisted on whitening Dominicans to look more European.

Black Dominicans had no choice but to lighten their skin to have a decent life or embrace their natural appearance yet be ridiculed for the rest of their life.
