The issue I am concerned about is femicide in Mexico. The term femicide is not something that is well known, as it just became rentruduced publicly recently. Femicide is the intentional murder of women simply because of their gender. It’s a sex based crime. In Mexico, everyday about 10 women are being killed. Whether you are 80 years old or a one year old. These incidents take place outside in public, in jobs, in your own house, etc.  Femicide has been around for many years but only recently has it been adressed in Mexico and all around the world. As a mexican woman, it is my duty to inform others on daily injustices going on around the world. The only way that the Mexican government will take actions against this issue is if the media spreads information about it and international people are aware of it. So the mexican government can be held accountable.

I choose it because everytime I hear it I am reminded as to why I choose this topic. The deep impact of this song is felt through its lyrics. This song is related to the issue because it is about the pandemic of femicide. This song speaks of hope, blood, sisterhood, of femicide. This song was made to be sung in Mexico City on March 7th  which is International Women’s Day. This song belongs to all women, as it connects everyone for the fight of justice for all the women who have been murdered and have disappeared; not only in Mexico but in Latin America, and all around the world. The rough translation of the lyrics go, “ Every minute, every week. They steal our friends, they kill our sisters. They destroy their bodies, they disappear. Don't forget their names, please, Mr. President.” This song asks for justice to remember the names of each of the women who have fallen, we plead for the next women to not become a number. The song asks for the President to remember them. This song is part of the solution as it’s an anthem for women to keep fighting for justice. In it’s lyrics, and most importantly it’s impact. This song reaches worldwide and it spreads so more people can learn about this growing pandemic. WIth this song we ask for change.

After watching this, I wanted to learn more about it. I also choose this documentary because it comes with different perspectives and addresses different problems. This documentary was posted on June 23 of 2015 and it’s about 30 minutes long on Youtube. This documentary obviously relates to the issue because it is about femicide. The documentary includes interviews with the victim's family, footage of protests as well an interview with an official. This documentary was targeted worldwide especially UNited States as it has english subtitles. Which makes it to be more accessible worldwide as english is a universal language.This documentary showcases the parts of the problems with femicide. Including as said in the documentary the fact that, “The government refuses to acknowledge the problem and the media remains silent...in a country already suffering drug related violence, It’s such a difficult topic to address because it ties together the way women are regarded within mexican culture and the unchecked impunity and corruption gripping mexican institutions.” This documentary therefore is part of the solution as it’s addressing a problem that still perseveres 5 years later.
