Brian David Mitchell kidnapped fourteen-year-old Elizabeth Ann Smart by knifepoint on June 5th, 2002 from her home in the Federal Heights neighborhood in Salt Lake City, Utah. Mary Katherine, Elizabeth’s younger sister, witnessed the entire kidnapping while pretending to be asleep. Mitchell and Wanda Barzee, his wife, held Elizabeth captive on the outskirts of Salt Lake City at a camp in the woods and repeatedly sexually assaulted her. Smart was later moved to San Diego County, California. Smart was held captive for about nine months, and during that time she went out on various outings with Barzee and Mitchell, but Smart was never recognized. Mary Katherine later remembered Mitchell’s voice as that of some hired help and that led to the long road of Smart’s discovery. She was discovered in Sandy, Utah, which was about eighteen miles from her house.

Knife, photos, Physical evidence
According to Elizabeth’s younger sister, the abductor, Brian Mitchell had a knife during the kidnapping. The actual arrested came when a couple who saw photos of Brian Mitchell on the news, spotted him with both Elizabeth and Wanda, and notified the police. Both Brian Mitchell and Wanda Barzee were arrested.

Fingerprints

On July 1st, police took voluntary fingerprints from male neighbors. These were used to compare with the dozens of prints left by visitors after Elizabeth disappeared.

Deputies did indeed run Mitchell’s fingerprints in the system, but nothing came up flagged and detectives were unable to determine his true identity. He had one prior encounter with the law 27 years earlier.

With there being so many people in and out of their home that were part of the construction project, fingerprints were basically used to rule out suspects rather than to identify who the actual kidnapper was.
