The Community had failed in their selection 10 years ago.

- Jonas was selected because he possessed four qualities deemed essential: intelligence, integrity, courage and wisdom (which he had not yet acquired). The last thing Jonas had was the Capacity to See Beyond, which no one in the Community could understand.
- Jonas was going to experience pain unlike anything anyone in the Community except for the Receiver knew as part of his training.
- When Jonas accepted his Selection, he saw beyond.

- His parents reassure Jonas that he has been given the highest honour. They did not know what happened to the former Receiver.
- As Receiver in training, Jonas was allowed to ask anyone questions and receive answers. He was prohibited from dream-telling. He would not be allowed to apply for Release and he was allowed to lie.
- Pain was dealt with immediately through medication, even at young ages.
- Jonas was shaken by the last rule of being allowed to lie. From a young age, citizens were taught to be truthful and be precise with their language.
