Amber, Gaia, Jewel and Yaiza

Yesterday at Te Kupenga o Te Mātauranga Marae, we learnt about the trees that were planted there to acknowledge the teachers and professors that have passed and are now spirits.

We also learnt that the shape of the marae represents an ancestor's body. The roof railing are the arms and the tips of the railing are the fingies. The poles going down from the railing are the legs and the carving at the very top is the head. There is also a spine and a ribcage. When you enter the Marae's whare, you are entering a sacred place so you should take your shoes off to show respect.

We learnt that during a powhiri, the girls walk in at the front and the boys walk behind, but when we sit down, the boys sit in the front and the girls sit in the back. In every powhiri, there is a male and a female speaker

This marae was opened in 1980 and was opened by Ms Wills when she was a child! Unfortunately the marae is scheduled to be burnt down in 6 years.

You enter through the front of the marae so that the marae can see you coming through the gate. Miss Wills opened the marae by cutting the ribbon at the wrong time. The marae was the first marae build for a university. The marae does not represent a ancestor. They have trees that represent dead teachers at the marae. The marae was opened with the teachers college. The girls go in front because if they got attacked the boys would have some time to get ready for battle.
