It can help us on our way to finding our vocation and meaning and purpose in life. 
It is good for society, as we can feel safe and looked after by a greater power (God), and that our problems will eventually be solved.

However, what Catholocism tends to do to society as a whole can  depend on the way people view the religion itself. People of most other religions, will tend to disagree with Catholocism. (In fact Catholics also tend to disagree with other religions) and people, therefore, can cause war for their basic beliefs and religion. These wars for basic beliefs can cause a divide between people.
