Find ways to group your students that are innovative and fun. Do not rely on gendered pairings or separations. Choose something fun like favorite foods, colors found on clothing, or letters found in names when calling on students to separate or line up!

* The elementary art teacher I observed used to hand out random images of artwork and then call on students who may have had a portrait, or landscape, or particular color when trying to form groups. This also incorporated students observing more art! (Kristina)

As teachers, it is important to take a step back and look at the information you are teaching your students from many different angles. Due to the fact that, up until recently, our society has viewed individuals as either being male or female, many of the lessons that are taught reflect this view. Since the way we define gender is changing, we need to work to represent a range of gender identities through the materials that we use and the information that we teach in our classrooms.

It may not seem like a big deal to some people, but to those who have emerging/changing gender identities or who may otherwise be sensitive to their gender identity, going the extra mile to have students learn the pronouns of their peers can make a big difference. Provide students with opportunities to share (or choose not to share) their pronouns as they introduce themselves to the class. Get into the habit of using "they" as a pronoun rather than assuming someone's gender to avoid upsetting anybody.

Coming out and figuring out your own identity can be one of the most difficult but rewarding experiences for a student. This extremely difficult process comes with a variety of challenges and issues. One problem that far too many students worry about is the support and representation in the classroom environment. Throughout schools we learn about flags of different nationalities and identities that help us hold onto our culture and identity. Providing a pride flag in a classroom or small stickers that identify the environment as a space for any gendered person is so important. This small decoration holds such a huge value to students. It also shows them that they are safe to express themselves and or have conversations without hesitating or worrying about judgement from others. Communicating to your students in small ways that you are an ally to them is extremely beneficial.

Another way that you can show your students support is mentioning possible LGBT+ clubs either on your school's campus or in your community. These places give these students an opportunity to get involved with their community and learn things that are important to them. This way if the students need more help or information about their gender or other personal identifying questions, they are able to go to resources, something that students of these identities are often lacking. Making your support to your students of all ways of life is so important to their education.
