This was because i never expected myself to be able to achieve such standards, as I have never challeneged myself before. I felt proud for sticking through the project although I faced multiple challenges along the way.

With respect to my goals, what was my greatest challenge?
My greatest challenge was to formulate new and creative ideas. I felt that the process was very exhausting and tiring as all the ideas seemed to be taken up by other people and there was none left for me. this caused me to feel very discouraged as i did not know how I should carry on and take my step. However, i managed to get ideas by experimenting with various resources and trying all the possible ideas I had in mind.

What can I do to improve?
I can try to be more daring with my thinking so that i can come up with new and bold ideas.
Evaluation of your Practical Dish

❏ In what ways have you met the task demands? (Keywords : healthy, manipulative skills)
Firstly, my cupcake was light and fluffy. It was not as dense as the one I made at home. I managed to do this by creaming the butter and sugar mixture for a longer period of time, allowing more air to be incorporated into the mixture, thus making it fluffier. Additionally, I added in more baking soda into my mixture, allowing it to fully rise in the oven. Secondly, I managed to frost my cupcakes properly. They did not melt on my cupcakes. I did this by preparing the frosting first, before making the batter. This allowed me to chill the icing in the fridge, allowing it to be firm and solid when I frost the cakes.

❏ Reflect on the practical test session
The practical session allowed me to hone my folding and creaming skills. During this practical, I also applied my knowledge of plating which I had learnt before. Everything went relatively smoothly as I had measured and prepared the ingredients before class started. Due to this, I was able to focus and spend more time on the process of mixing and baking. Additionally, I managed to organize my ingredients properly by minimalising the amount of space they occupied.

❏ Were you able to manage time?
Yes, I was. As I mentioned previously, I prepared my ingredients beforehand. Other than that, I made sure that I spent a maximum of ten minutes carrying out each process, etc 10 minutes for creaming, 10 minutes for folding, before carrying out the next process.

❏ Did you face difficulties? How did you overcome them?
I faced difficulty transferring the cream cheese from the bowl to the ziplock piping bag. I made quite a mess and my hands were sticky. I overcame this by wiping off the cream cheese. Apart from that, while I was piping the cream cheese, my bag burst. I had to quickly transfer the cream into an extra ziplock bag that I had brought so that it would not melt. In order to prevent the same thing from happening, I cut a bigger hole in the ziplock bag to pipe as a smaller hole would result and a higher air pressure in the bag which would lead to it bursting.

❏ How would you have done it differently?
I could have bought a piping bag to pipe my cupcakes better. My piping was a little messy as I used a ziplock bag. Secondly, I could have garnished the frosting with strawberry leaves to make the plating style more creative and less simple.

❏ Reflect on the food blogging process
I learnt how to take photos from an angle that allowed to food to look aesthetically pleasing. I also learnt how to describe my cooking or baking process using keywords.

❏ How useful were the nutritional tools?
They allowed me to check the amount of calories and vitamins the ingredients had and this allowed me to make good choices regarding the ingredients I should include in the dish to make it as nutritious as possible.

❏ How manageable were the manipulative skills for you?
The manipulative skills were simple and manageable. For the practical, I made use of creaming and folding. I had already practiced these skills numerous times, both in school and at home. This practice allowed me to familliarise myself with creaming and folding.

How purposeful were the investigative activities in helping you come up with your final creation?
For the first investigative activity, I tried making an apple tart. This required me to apply the rubbing in method in order to create breadcrumbs. However, my attempt had failed because my shortcrust pastry was too hard and puffy. Hence I ruled out making shortcrust pastry as it was risky and was a skill that I needed much more practice in. For the second investigative activity, I tried making a carrot cake. This required me to apply folding and creaming of butter and cream cheese. The cake was okay, but the frosting melted while I was icing the cake and as a result my presentation grade was low. From these experiences, I decided to tap on my creaming and folding skills as I was better at them compared to rubbing in. I wanted to incorporate cream cheese into my dish as I liked how it brought flavour to the dish, and made it look more appetising. Hence, I decided to make strawberry cupcakes with cream cheese frosting as my final product, as through this, I will be able to apply my creaming and folding skills.

Creativity:
- I hope to be able to make dishes that are creative in both presentation and taste. I would like to add a little something special to all my food that will compliment the food, while being unique. In terms of presentation, I also want to make my food look aesthetically pleasing, along with looking special.

Project Management:
I tend to dawdle and procrastinate. As such, my time management is usually rather weak. However, this year, I hope to not only have time to accomplish cooking and cleaning, but to also have time to properly arrange and present my food, and not do it in a hurry like I usually do.

Expression:
In presentation, I hope to be able to convey the different styles (classy, children-friendly, casual, artistic) through the way I arrange my food. I noticed I do tend to simply arrange my food in a "classy" manner -- I hope by the end of this year, I can learn to not only try out different ways of "conveying emotions" (in a way?) through food, but to also know when I should use which style of presentation.

This is my paper sculpture. It represents my friendship with my best friend. A year ago, we were separated and she went to another school. Both of us were devastated, but soon enough she was able to fit into her new school well, unlike me. I had trouble making friends and coping with the lessons in school. I felt angry and humiliated because in primary school, I had always been the "smarter" and "better" one. It seemed like the roles were reversed. The holes in the sculpture represented how empty i felt without her by my side and how i did not regard her as my "best friend" anymore despite the long 6 years of friendship we had built. I crumpled the paper as it reflects the feelings i had towards her, envy, anger and sadness. It was supposed to be in the shape of a snowflake as it was a running joke between the both of us about how i believed that she had Elsa's powers :)

Yu Wen's sculpture is about how her friends were separated from her after primary school. Her sculpture is in the shape of a school, and there are paper cutouts protruding from both sides of the main figure, some of them negative shapes, and the others positive shapes. The positive shapes represent her and her only friend that came to rgs while the negative ones represent the rest of her friends whom she has lost touch with. I admire her work as it is expressive yet easy to understand at the same time. While looking at her sculpture, i could get a glimpse of what she was feeling when she made the artpiece. I hope to learn her ways of conveying her message in an easy way just by using paper and cutting it up in clear and simple cuts. I also like how she played with the texture of the paper by crumpling up the main body of the figure to show how her primary school life is over.

Stories can also be a source of entertainment, and they also teach us important life lessons and values. Stories can come in different forms, be it through books or writing, movies, or artworks. Out of the four art pieces/ photos shown to us, my favourite is National Language Class by Chua Mia Tee. It tells us about how life was in Singapore during the Japanese occupation and just from the painting, one can see what actuallly happens

currenIlo Ilo is a movie set in the 1990s describing and showcasing what the situation in Singapore was like back then. The film touches on aspects such as the economic and social situation faced by locals. Other than that, the film also included the perspective of foreign workers in Singapore and the woes experienced by them. The main storyline of the movie focuses on the Lim family and their helper, Teresa. The Lim family was experiencing financial difficulties. The film was mainly about how the Lim family and Teresa learnt to cope with new changes in their lives. Personally, I felt that the movie was touching and emotional despite its abrupt and unexpected ending. It close to home as the movie literally explained what being a Singaporean was like. Something i really liked about the movie was its subtle changes that made me go "ouch", for eg. the part where the dashboard of mr Lim's taxi was empty as compared to his old car where the dashboard was messy and full of random objects. I enjoyed this movie as it allows people to realise the hardship of Singaporeans back then and what "normal" was like for them, allowing the viewers to feel a sense of gratitude towards what the current situation in Singapore is like right now. It also brings forth the importance of one's family. While explaining all of these points, the movie uses a light- hearted tone in contrast to its heavy and melancholic .

This sculpture is a depiction of happiness. My artwork is made up of 2 pieces. The headgear is a simple one- ply cardboard sheet. I bent the cardboard to form a circular shape and attached long and thin pieces of cardboard at the front of the headgear, and tied the pieces of cardboard up using a rubber band. The headgear is used to represent how one feels the happiness "springing" from within and spiralling out of control. The second piece, the neck-to-mouth cover, is made the same way as the headgear. However, instead of attaching cardboard pieces, I pasted strips of recycled newspaper on the inside of the neck gear, to create the "flowing" effect. The neck gear is used to represent how happiness flows and engulfs a person. I doubled up the neck gear as a mouth cover to show how one feels "speechless" upon experiencing happiness.

areas done well:

I feel that I have chosen the right materials to depict the right emotion. I managed to bring out the theme “happiness” by leveraging on the certain characteristics and textures of the materials. For example, I used the long pieces of cardboard and tied them up to show the “springiness” of happiness. Another example is the newspaper pieces. I used them to show the “flowiness” of happiness and I am quite happy that it worked out quite well.

areas for improvement:

I feel that I could have used a wider variety of textures from the texture dictionary to express my feelings more. For the sculpture, I only used 2 main types of textures, one for the newspaper, and the other for the long pieces of cardboard. For example, I could have made use of other types of textures such as twirling, cutting and more, while making it suit the theme of happiness. Secondly, I feel that I could have made the newspaper pieces longer to show how happiness can “engulf” someone, and that would have been more creative as the sculpture will span from the head of the user all the way to the person’s hip, which is unique and different compared to the usual shape of the sculpture, which usually covers only one part of the person’s body. Lastly, I feel that I could have been more expressive while modelling with my sculpture to tell a better story about it. As you can see above, I only made use of my hands in the photo shoot. To make the poster more interesting and to show a better example of happiness, I could have made use of the space provided and performed, by doing actions such as jumping or twirling. That would have been a creative and unique idea for my poster as it really depicts what happiness looks like, as compared to my original poster of me waving my arms, which looks rather forced and awkward. Other than that, I could have made my face look more happy and less crammed to convince people that I really AM happy while using the product.

1. With reference to "Drunken Sailor" and "Do you hear the people sing" how are the music elements used to enhance the sense of bonding and motivation? Compare the usage between 2 pieces.

- tonality
- rhythm
- tempo
- lyrics
Do you hear the people sing
tonality: modulates between major and minor, ends with major key
rhythm: dotted rhythm
tempo: walking pace; march
lyrics: its about a revolution
Drunken Sailor
tonality: minor
rhythm: consistent
tempo: walking pace; work song
lyrics: its a work song about drunk sailors used by sailors when they work

2. Cite one example of how you can apply this knowledge. What other songs have you heard, that use such elements of music to enhance a sense of bonding/ motivation?
One example is "Don't stop Believing" by The Journey. It has a quick and steady tempo, not unlike the tempo of "Do You Hear the People Sing". This march-like tempo incites feelings of motivation in the listeners.

3. What is the power using the human voice to express feelings through singing?

The human voice is unique as everyone is born with it. Unlike instruments, the human voice can portray a wide variety of emotion and can definitely express more feelings compared to instruments. The human voice can also change its tone, pitch and sound colour according to the type of music.

4. What is one value you have learnt today and how you can apply it?

Today I learnt how to use my diaphragm to sing when it comes to higher notes. I also learnt the difference between head voice and chest voice. The head voice has a much thinner sound quality compared to chest voice as it is used to sing higher notes.

Additionally, these dramas and operas contain real-life and valuable advice for us to take heed of. These forms of entertainment are able to engage us, tell us a story, yet inform us about the its intended message so that we can be persuaded in a subtle way and hence learn from it.

What value have u learnt today and how can you apply it?
I have learnt that the songs in a movie, be it background or theme song, can tell us a lot about the movie itself. It tells us about its tone eg. whether it is a cheerful or sad show. The tempo, rhythm and tonality of the music used plays a huge role in telling the story. Theme songs/ background music in a major key with a fast tempo shows that the movie is a happy and cheerful one. However, theme songs/ background music in a minor key with a slow tempo sets the mood of a sad and melancholic movie.

What are your inspirations?

I play the piano and the clarinet! I've been practising new pieces on the piano such as Debussy's Arabesque, since my practical exam has been postponed. I find that I have more time to practise during this circuit breaker and i find that it is a blessing in disguise. On normal days, I simply cannot find tine to practise, so I have made up the lost time by practising hard during the CB. I practised my clarinet once during this whole CB. because I don't really have the motivation to practise :( Hopefully that will change because my clarinet section in the band will be having an online chamber session! I plan to learn to play the guitar during CB. So far, I managed to learn the simple C G and D chord which are usually played in pop songs.

The steady beat of the first song reminded me of trains, so i I drew the train. However, as the song progressed, the tempo increased drastically and it almost felt like the train was going out of control, and that's when I drew the ocean and the train falling into the ocean. For the second song I drew birds, simply because the title of the song was Lullaby in Birdland. However, I drew several birds plunging to their death due to the words in the song "goodbye". Additionally, halfway through the song, short and sharp drum beats could be heard and they reminded me of gunshots, so I drew a person shooting the bird. For the last song, I drew eyes in the ocean as the song was "ocean eyes".

I rarely watched horror movies and besides that, I was new to EDM so I had to take the initiative to find out more about both of them, and also a way to integrate both EDM and horror movies together seamlessly.

2) Pick one of the lessons/ modules from GMP. What did you exhibit during this module?

I had to exhibit collaboration with my group mates. We had to synchronise our playing and singing to "Castle on the Hill" by Ed Sheeran in order to make our cover sound nice. Additionally, we had to improvise many parts of the cover, which required creativity, as we did not have sheet music to refer to.

3) What have you learnt about yourself in the GMP that you would like to improve upon in the next Aesthetics module?

I would like to submit my work time. There were a few occasions that I submitted my EDM assignment a few minutes past the deadline. I hope to abolish this unhealthy habit as it might affect the quality of my assignments and projects in the future.

4) What did you like about this module? What did you dislike about the module?

Like- I liked the busking session, I liked analysing Phantom of the Opera and La Donna È Mobile.

Dislike- the EDM contract

Lastly, I could have revised the technique for making shortcrust pastry as I forgot the recipe and technique and I wasted quite a lot of time asking others for the ingredients and techniques.
