         <title>Lesson Plan- Integrate CC ELA and Science- Breaking Balloon Records</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>1.&nbsp; Show picture of two pilots. Ask what you think they are piloting. (picture from Article)</p><p>2.&nbsp; Preteach vocabulary word "helium balloon"- Ask students what type of balloons they are know.&nbsp; Show pictures of hot air balloon, helium balloon they would buy at store, water balloon, person blowing up a&nbsp;balloon and the helium balloon from the story (link to picture is in the Curriculum Key Step 1)&nbsp; Make sure the students know the vocabulary word "helium ballon" before reading story (use Google to find pictures of types of balloons)  - Technology Integration idea - use Popplet for organizing lesson</p><p>3.&nbsp; Read aloud the story,&nbsp; Stop when you get to the vocabulary words "distance", "duration", and "record".&nbsp; Have the students use context clues (see Strategy Lesson) to define the words.</p><p>4.&nbsp; Identify Who, What, When, Where, Why and How for the story.&nbsp; Use a picture of a hand to help the students remember 5W and H. - Technology Integration idea- use Popplet for organizing lesson</p><p>5.&nbsp; Go back to types of Balloons-Classify Balloons - "Those that Float" and "Those that don't Float" (if using Popplet- move around on page- if using printed pictures place under headings)</p><p>6.&nbsp; Ask kids if they can think of any other way to inflate a balloon.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Show them Pop Rocks Candy, a soda.&nbsp; Ask them if they think these items would inflate the balloon. Discuss the procedure. (fill balloon with Pop Rocks, put over the soda bottle, allow the candy to drop into the soda and watch the balloon inflate. (if you can't find Pop Rocks inflate balloon using baking soda and vinegar.)</p><p>7.&nbsp; Take a picture of the Pop Rock/Soda balloon and add it to the classification chart.</p>]]></description>
