Following Italians defeat in World War 2, the United nations general assembly adopted a resolution on November 21,1949 granting Libya in independence.

Libya gained independence in December 24, 1951.

The main reaons were:
1.Italy's huge population needed more territories.
2. It was a good place to emigrate
3. Strategic position
4. It was a rich region

First Italy conquered the Ottoman Empire, later n 1911 they attacked Tripoli liberating Libya from the Ottomans.
After 1934 Italian Libya was part into Italian Cyrenaica and Tripolitania.
Italians unified Tripolitania and Cyrenaica as the colony of Libya; to do this Mussolini used brutal tactics which crushed Libyan resistance.

Italy treated Libya very poorly. They built concentration camps where thousands of Libyans must live under complete control of the Italian army.

During World War 2 Libya was used as battlefield. After it the allies failed to agree on the future of Libya. At that time it was a huge territory with few population so it was a good place for Italian emigrants.The suspicions between occident and the Soviet Union make the UN decide to give the independence to the country leaving it in hand of Idris I.
Libya declared independence as a constitutional and hereditary monarchy under him .The council of 10 assisted the Libyan national assembly in drawing up a constitution.

Italy paid Libya 5 million

Libyans were forced to live in coentration camps.
Hospitals , schools and factories were built creating more jobs.

African products became available to the international market allowing colonies to became prosperous

Meanwhile the Government of National Accord continues its struggle to establish legitimacy and a measure of control beyond the capital.
