We can see that all the silverware attracts
your attention into the middle, we see everything carefully placed to do so, The main part of the image is in the center. The silverware is placed in various directions which contributes to the attention to the center. The use of contrast in this image helps to create a deeper feeling to what we see. We also see the technique of balance in the image where all the silverware is placed where they all are as equal to each other. We do also see the use of harmony with all the silverware creating one big image.

Jan Groover always had different perspectives on life “I had some wild concept that you could change space which you can,” Quoted from her website shows this. She was inspired to create photography by John Szarkowski, the longtime director of the photography department at the Museum of Modern Art. John Helped her with her photography. Towards her end of career she focused on churches, graveyards and landscapes of her new surroundings, going even further in her discovery of space and illusion.

Jan Groover shows the elements of value and space throughout the overall artwork. It looks like Jan Groover has taken this photo in a studio where she has controlled the lighting to show the value of the silverware, on the spoons we see that the shade is outside of the shape of the spoon and the light is in the middle while on the knives the gradient of shade is going towards the bottom of the image. Space is shown through the between each piece of silverware, There is a lot of negative space which gives the artwork a more spaced out look. These elements contribute to the composition of purposely scattered perspective.

Meaning and Context

The meaning of this artwork is shown through the arrangement of the materials used and what it symbolizes, the overall artwork shows life where everyone has ups and downs throughout their life. The lighting which shows dark shadows means the dark times in life and the lighter parts show the lighter times in life. The scattering of the silverware shows how life is random but it all leads to something like how the silverware is placed in a way where it directs our attention to one place which is the end of our life which may be good or bad. Because Jan Groover was interested in the idea of being able to change space she means that you can change your life and make it better.
