It looks like Jan Groover has taken this photo in a studio where she has controlled the lighting to show the value of the silverware, on the spoons we see that the shade is outside of the shape of the spoon and the light is in the middle while on the knives the gradient of shade is going towards the bottom of the image. Space is shown through the between each piece of silverware, There is a lot of negative space which gives the artwork a more spaced out look. The lighting which shows dark shadows means the dark times in life and the lighter parts show the lighter times in life.
