A connected educator is someone who is willing to engage in conversations in the digital world - this can be through spaces like Twitter, D2L, Facebook groups, and other online communities. For a school leader his means going beyond the walls of the school; engaging in conversations (as opposed to consumption) through these platforms allow for greater opportunities to collaborate with educators we would otherwise not have met.

I don’t know how I lead since I am still learning all of this myself, but this is what I am currently doing: Using D2L as a form of communication, learning, and conversations with my students has been a great way for me to show and help my colleagues expand their own digital learning in the classroom. There was a need at our school for D2L and Fresh Grade, which I quickly organized an after school information session which then turned into an afternoon workshop. We work as a staff to post on our school Twitter feed. This is something new for us this year, we are always encouraging each other to share what we are doing on Twitter so that our parent community can see what the students are learning.

Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach’s video ties in well with the five core leadership capacities:
1. Using social media and different forms of technology needs to be a part of the SIPSAW.

2. These digital tools need to be accessible resources for students and educators.

3. These resources need to be used in a way that helps student learning and for them to develop their own personal learning networks.

4. Moving from paper to digital tools in order to collect student data will allow for quick feedback to increase as, for, and of student learning.

5. Challenging our current practices by developing our own online learning networks will increase professional development, and provide new learning opportunities to take place in schools.

I realize that due to many constraints, educators may not be getting as many professional development opportunities as needed or wanted. I can use various forms of digital communication (Twitter, Facebook, email, etc) to connect educators, find new information and learn from others. In building my own personal learning network, I can now bring all of my new learning to others in my school communities through sharing on-line.

I found that the video related quite well to the five Core Leadership Capacities. In order to be a connected educator for 21st century leadership, the use of social media and technology tools should be part of the goal setting that takes place in schools, in order to help lead to improved teaching and learning. Next, the use of on-line resources can be linked to curriculum and professional learning priorities with student achievement as the focus. Promoting connected Collaborative Learning Cultures enables schools, school communities and districts to easily work together and learn from each other. Finally, challenging staff to develop their own personal learning network encourages them to add to current practices and foster innovation through conversation with others around the world.
