Amir sees America as an opportunity to start new. He is trying to bury his guilt over the wrongs he committed in Afghanistan. Baba, however, is having a harder time adjusting. Ch.11: Ch. 11: How does Amir and Baba’s view of America differ? 

"For me, America was a place to bury my memories. For Baba, a place to mourn his,"(129). This quote signifies the juxtaposition between Baba and Amir and their transition to America. Amir used America as a way to reinvent himself. Furthermore, he used America as a way to forget all the dreadful things that happened in Afghanistan. He is using his new memories to block out the old ones. On the other hand, for Baba, it is a remainder of the things he lost or had to lose for his new life in America. In Afghanistan, he was considered wealthy, but in America that changed because he works in a gas station to receive an income. However, Baba is still giving because when he took Amir to a bar and he treated people to drinks. And In Afghanistan, he took people out and treated them to dinner to celebrate Amir winning the kite race. I feel like Amir is transitioning easier than Baba because of age and different amount of opportunities. Baba's refusal to chemotherapy treatment falls under  character development.  i say this because Baba use to be this strong guy who never showed weakness. I believe Baba refuses chemotherapy because it ties into his entire persona of being a strong man who doesn't need help from anyone. Amir and Baba's view of America differs because Baba sees the new country as a place where he's not respected and he doesnt have a lot of money so he cant provide like he used to in his old country; meanwhile Amir has taken a liking to the country and sees it as a new beginning/ clean slate.  Amir would go on to say " America was different. Baba and Amir find out that Baba has cancer in one of his lungs. The doctor tells them both that chemotherapy can slow the growth of the mass in his lung but Baba refuses the chemo. I think this goes under the theme of masculinity because Baba doesn't like to show weakness. Baba and Amir's views of America differ, because baba more so views America as a means to an end rather than a new opportunity like Amir does. Amir has more of a grateful view about America and adjusts quickly. Baba however seems to have more of a negative view on America. While describing Baba's differences with the rest of his neighbors. "Most of our neighbors in Fremont were...exactly the sort of blue-collar peaople who sould soon suffocate under the pillow Reganomics pressed to their faces. Baba was the lone Republican in our building. " (Hosseini 106). This illustrates the ideological and economic differences between Baba and the other members of the apartment. and example of an identity clash is when baba tries to write a check or the Nguyens and trashes the store when asked for ID. This quote shows the difference: "I wanted to tell them that, in Kabul, we snapped a tree branch and used it as a credit card. Hassan and I would take the wooden stick to the bread maker. he'd carve notches on our stick with his knife, one notch for each loaf of naan he'd pull for us from the tandoor's roaring flames. At the end of the month, my father paid him for the number of notches on the stick. That was it. No questions. No ID." This shows Baba's conflict with asking for ID. He feels that the Nguyens don't trust him, after all the service he's given them and also doesn't feel respected, unlike in Kabul, where is word was trusted.

This is an example of Culture clash because of the contrast between how payment in Kabul was based on trust and credibility, but in America the store clerks were required to ask for ID, no matter how many times you have bought from them. Unlike Afghanistan, Baba was not the hero in America like he was in Afghanistan. He was in a world where he was no longer put on a pedestal; in america, he was just like everyone else. In addition  to being stripped of his title of superiority, he was faced with more hardships. While in Afghanistan, he knew everyone, had connections with everyone, and was considered quite wealthy, all of this was loss in America. He was faced with the harsh reality of being considered normal. For Amir, America was his fresh start. By moving to America, he left behind all his baggage such as his awful treatment towards Hasaan. All of his biggest regrets were wiped when he came to America. America was his opportunity to start with a fresh slate and strive for his dreams. This is an example of a culture clash, because Baba views Mr. Nguyen asking for ID as a form of not trusting him, but in reality in America, you need an ID to write a check to verify the legitimacy of that check.
