October 3rd, 1990, was considered the end of the Cold War. Germany's reunification of East and West reunited families and friends who had not seen each other for more than 40 years. East Germans gained back their freedom, which automatically opened a new future, opportunities, and improvement of living circumstances. It gave them hope and a new perspective on life (History, 2009).

Ash, T.G.(2014, November 6). The fall of the Berlin Wall: what it meant to be there.

Health, to me, is a state of physical, emotional, and mental well-being. To be free from illness and disease, to be able to carry out my daily responsibilities without physical complications or compromises. To cope with everyday challenges, but also to problem-solve in other situations. Health is feeling welcomed at home around my family, friends, and places. To be able to eat healthy and to make healthy choices. To express my opinions and feelings freely, to be accepted for who I am, and to live based on my Christian beliefs.

For me, the most essential aspect of Competency Standard 12.3 was effective communication. I have enriched my understanding of how to communicate with an interpreter effectively. Having read Domain 7, I now realise the importance of interpreters in my future career, their impact on a patient, and the interpreter regarding sensitive issues that debriefing might be required. This knowledge will be essential to me in my practical experience. Because I have not yet been in this situation, I need to raise my awareness of how to effectively communicate with an interpreter, as this might be part of my upcoming practical in an aged care facility. Subsequently, I felt sorry for patients who need an interpreter because it must feel uncomfortable having a third person know your medical diagnosis, which should be a matter of patient and doctor relationship—equally, this comforts the patient when listening and talking in their language.

Principal Health Issues That Refugees Face from Syria

Syria is located on the east coast of the Mediterranean Sea in southwestern Asia, with Damascus as its capital. A civil war began in 2011 when Syria protested against the Assad family, ruling over this country for 40 years. Since then, hundreds of thousands of Syrians have been killed, and over half of the country's population (13 million) has been displaced(Laub, 2023).

Three Common Health concerns for Syrian refugees migrating to Australia are:

Immunisation: Catch-up immunisations must be provided due to different immunisation schedules in Syria and an interruption of health services due to migration. Therefore, children and adults might not be fully vaccinated. This can cause a risk of VPD (Vaccine Preventable Diseases) outbreaks. Refugees might have been vaccinated overseas but still need an immunisation record. A complete vaccination is required if documentation is absent (Paxton et al., 2023).

Mental Health: Many children and adults have experienced trauma, family separation, conflict, and human rights violations. Other factors contributing to mental illness are, e.g., settling in a different, language barriers, difficulties in finding employment housing, financial instability, and loss of community and country. Examples of mental health issues are PTSD – Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, and bipolar. Several services are available for refugees to help with mental health issues. These services include, e.g., specialised torture and trauma services, Women's Health, ANU Australian child and adolescent trauma, loss and grief network - refugee children, and family information (Singleton et al., 2023).

Anaemia, Iron Deficiency, and Other Blood Conditions are common in refugees from Syria. This is due to food insecurity, prolonged deprivation, and inadequate access to nutritious food and clean water. Anaemia is defined as a low blood haemoglobin concentration related to iron deficiency and low levels of red blood cells. Other blood conditions are, e.g., Congenital neutropenia and B12 deficiency. Patients should be referred to a paediatrician, and children who are severely malnourished to a dietitian who performs anthropometry (Chaves et al., 2023).

Chaves, N. and Paxton, G.
