In contrast, fatness is linked to low status and seen as a sign of sloth and gluttony. Drawing on an original data set of news reports, we examine how such social and moral meanings of body size inform news reporting on eating disorders and overweight. We find that the news media in our sample typically discuss how a host of complex factors beyond individual control contribute to anorexia and bulimia. In that anorexics and bulimics are typically portrayed as young white women or girls, this reinforces cultural images of young white female victims

examines how widely shared cultural values shape social problem construction and, in turn, can reproduce social inequality

This study looked at how the media has an effect on eating disorders and who it effect they frowned that the media set the norms for what people Wight and how people should look this expressly effected the way women and young girls felt about them self this was linked to anorexia and other eating disorder's this is due to the overwilling reporting on being over Wight
http://www.sscnet.ucla.edu/soc/faculty/saguy/saguyandgruys.pdf
Janyka Cudjoe

Browne, K and Hamilton-Giachritsis, C (2005) The influence of violent media on children and adolescents: A public Health Approach, Lancet 365: 702-10

There have been 5 meta analytic reviews and 1 quasi systematic review (all North American) of research to show the effects of media on aggression. It was found that the notion of the media having an effect on aggression was supported but there were further questions that arisen. 1) the methodology used and the generalisability 2) the extent of the effects. There are tow distinct groups of belief about the medias effects on aggression. the media pessimist who believe its very harmful and the media skeptics who argue there is no reliable evidence to support the hypothesis. however it is regularly used as an explanation of violent crime by young people. The review of the research found that some people were generally more susceptible to the effects of the media than others and that boys were particularly more susceptible than girls in terms of violent viewing. They also discovered that temperament and situation such as being brought up in a violent home can make the children more susceptible. It was found that those who were most susceptible to the effects of the media did have biological responses in the short term there was heightened violent thoughts, feelings and physiological arousal and in the long term aggressive beliefs, attitudes, violent schema and behavioral patterns were all increased. This is referred to as The Generalised Aggression Model.

Donella O'Donnell

Through the media, children now have more access to learning programmes and cartoons, which may assist additional learning after school. However, some of these programmes have also been known to promote the mimicking of bad behaviours such as Peppa pig, a pig with sometimes selfish and demanding behaviours have also shown some children to copy this behavior.

Positive children's' programs such as Dora the explorer which off problem solving, interaction and also teaches the viewer Spanish and Blues clues, which offer the viewer problem solving, rhymes, colours counting and shapes. Furthermore, children with learning difficulties are not exempt from the medias reach as they to benefit from learning program's as they offer sensory learning through colours, rhymes, interaction and even sign language from shows such as Mr Tumble.

The media now have a host of learning programmes from 0-16 including those previously mentioned right up to BBC bitesize to support additional learning for GCSE preparation. Due to some children coming from differing backgrounds, some may have additional after school support through parents and siblings however, some children from a more deprived background may not have a willing parent able to support their learning.
