A health care worker's uniform depends on what their specific profession is. For example, a doctor, surgeon, or nurse will typically wear scrubs or a lab coat and closed toed shoes with grips. A social worker or person of similar profession may wear business clothes, such as slacks with a blouse or button up shirt. Most all workers in the health care field will wear closed toed shoes at all times. It is important that all health care workers wear a name tag or other form of personal identification so that patients and other people in the building know who they are and what their job is.

Personal hygiene is a very important factor in patient care. Daily showers, anti perspirants, and brushed teeth are important because it allows their patients to see that if they can take care of themselves properly, they will be able to provide the utmost patient care. Males should be clean shaven with short and manageable hair, and women should have any long hair pulled back as to not interfere with patient care. No excessive jewelry should be worn, as it can get in the way during practice. Wedding rings and simple earrings may be worn, but nothing that extends below the ear lobe. Women may choose to wear makeup to appear more professional but it is not mandatory.

Visible tattoos and piercings in any health care profession are typically seen as unprofessional. The standard is 1-2 ear piercings per ear in women and none in males. Gauges, or stretched ear lobes, are typically prohibited in this field. Tattoos that are hidden under the uniform are accepted as long as the patient doesn't see them. Any other forms of body modifications such as a split tongue, lip piercings, eyebrow piercings or other face piercings, and face tattoos are strictly prohibited and seen as very unprofessional to a patient.
